Bryan Mbeumo scored twice as Manchester United came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 and finish their pre-season preparations by winning the Snapdragon Cup.
The Cameroon international was the decisive figure in the friendly, overturning an early deficit and continuing what has been an impressive run of form during Manchester United’s summer preparations.
Atletico made the stronger start and took the lead after only five minutes when Arnau Ortiz beat Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton to put the Spanish side ahead.
United gradually grew into the contest and eventually found a way back into the game through Mbeumo.
The forward equalised from the penalty spot after Shea Lacey was fouled, giving the 2026 summer signing an opportunity to level the score. Mbeumo made no mistake as United responded to Atletico’s early advantage.
The Cameroon striker then completed his double in the second half to put Manchester United ahead.
His second goal came after Jack Fletcher recovered possession on the right side and created the opportunity for Mbeumo to finish and complete the turnaround.
Atletico were unable to find another equaliser, while United came close to adding a third when Morten Hjulmand struck the post.
The result gives Manchester United a winning finish to their pre-season schedule and provides a positive final result before the start of the new campaign.
Mbeumo’s contribution will be particularly encouraging for United, with the forward already appearing to have established himself as an important attacking option.
His two goals also highlighted the different ways in which he can influence a game. The first came from a penalty, while the second followed an attacking move from open play.
Speaking to MUTV after the match, Mbeumo was asked about his preferred position and stressed his ability to operate in different roles.
“I can’t really choose! Obviously, I’ve done some great things on the right wing, but also some good things at striker…” he said.
“I’m more experienced…”
His comments underline the versatility he believes he can offer Manchester United, with the Cameroon international capable of contributing both on the right wing and as a striker.
Although the Snapdragon Cup is a pre-season competition, Mbeumo’s performance provides an encouraging indication of his potential importance to United once competitive football begins.
The forward has already shown an ability to make a difference in different situations, while his understanding with his new team-mates appears to be developing quickly.
For Manchester United, the comeback was also significant beyond the two goals from Mbeumo.
After conceding within the opening five minutes, Ruben Amorim’s side were able to recover their composure, take control of the match and eventually turn the result in their favour.
The victory therefore gives United momentum heading into the official campaign, while Mbeumo leaves pre-season having strengthened his claim to be one of the team’s key attacking players.
The Cameroon international’s brace against Atletico was the latest indication of the impact he can have, with his ability to score from both set-piece situations and open play offering Manchester United another attacking dimension.
United will now turn their attention to the start of the campaign after ending their summer preparations with a trophy and a performance led by their new forward.
