Mali international to join La Liga side on free transfer despite lower salary offer
Malian midfielder Aliou Dieng has signed an agreement to join Valencia CF on a free transfer, marking a significant step in his career as he prepares to leave Al Ahly SC at the end of the current season.
According to sources close to the player, Dieng has finalised a contract that will see him move to the Spanish side ahead of the 2025–2026 campaign. The deal is understood to run until the summer of 2029, bringing an end to his six-year spell in Egyptian football.
The transfer comes after Dieng’s contract with Al Ahly entered its final months, allowing him to negotiate a free move abroad. Despite receiving a more lucrative offer to extend his stay in Cairo, the 28-year-old prioritised a switch to one of Europe’s top five leagues, underlining his long-held ambition to compete at a higher level.
Medical completed as negotiations accelerate
Efforts to finalise the transfer intensified in recent days, with the player and his representatives working to conclude formalities. Dieng had already undergone a medical examination in Valencia weeks earlier, paving the way for the agreement to be completed.
The move signals a major transition for the midfielder, who has been a consistent figure for Al Ahly since joining the club in 2019 from MC Alger. During his time in Egypt, he established himself as a reliable presence in midfield, contributing both defensively and in possession.
His current market valuation is estimated at around €3 million, according to Transfermarkt, reflecting his experience and steady performances at both club and international level.
Al Ahly previously resisted Valencia approach
The transfer also follows an earlier attempt by Valencia to secure Dieng’s services during the winter transfer window. At that time, Al Ahly rejected an offer reportedly worth €500,000 for the remainder of his contract.
The decision was made at the request of head coach Jess Torup, who viewed Dieng as an essential part of his squad for the ongoing campaign. The midfielder has since featured prominently, making 31 appearances across all competitions and scoring one goal.
With his contract now nearing its conclusion, Al Ahly’s position has shifted, enabling the player to depart on a free transfer once the season ends.
A pivotal moment in Dieng’s career
Dieng’s move to Valencia represents a defining moment in his professional journey. Having built his reputation in African club football, the midfielder will now have the opportunity to test himself in La Liga, one of Europe’s most competitive environments.
For Valencia, the acquisition offers added depth and experience in midfield without a transfer fee, aligning with the club’s strategy of securing value in the market.
As preparations begin for the upcoming season, both player and club will be hopeful that the move proves mutually beneficial, with Dieng aiming to establish himself on a larger stage while Valencia look to strengthen their squad ahead of a demanding campaign.
