Slavko Vincic has announced his retirement from international refereeing immediately after taking charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in New Jersey, closing one of European football’s most distinguished modern officiating careers.
The Slovenian Football Association confirmed in a statement on its official website that the 46-year-old has decided to end his professional career having been appointed to oversee what it described as “the most important match in world sport”.
Vincic was also named the best referee at the 2026 World Cup by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), a recognition that capped a 16-season spell at the elite level.
