Barcelona’s plans to reshape their defence this summer are effectively on hold until a decision is made on the future of Ronald Araujo, whose contract at the club runs until 2031.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, the club’s sporting department has no intention of signing a new centre-back during the current transfer window unless the Uruguay international leaves.
The stance means Araujo’s situation will determine whether Barcelona enter the market for a central defender at all, despite a recognised desire within the club to reinforce the back line ahead of the new season.
Left-footed, experienced defender is priority profile
If Araujo does depart, director of football Deco is expected to lead the search for a defender with significant experience in European football and a preference for using his left foot.
Barcelona believe they are well stocked with young central defenders, both in the first team and across their age-group sides, and therefore want any incoming player to bring maturity and top-level know-how rather than add to the pool of emerging talents.
The club’s recruitment focus is understood to be firmly on a left-footed centre-back, as they seek better balance in the heart of defence. This profile is considered a higher priority than simply adding another right-footed option similar to those already in the squad.
Jon Martin monitored but not a current option
Real Sociedad defender Jon Martin is one of the names highlighted as being on Barcelona’s radar.
However, AS reports that Barcelona are not currently planning a move for the player, primarily because of his age. The view within the club is that they already possess enough promising youngsters in that position and that any new signing should offer a different, more experienced profile.
For now, Martin is regarded more as a talent to watch rather than an immediate transfer target for this window.
Romero admired but does not fit key requirement
Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has also resurfaced as a candidate admired by the sporting hierarchy at Barcelona.
The Argentina international is well regarded for his experience at the highest level, his forceful personality and his intense competitive streak – all qualities the club believe could strengthen their defensive unit.
However, Romero is right-footed, and Barcelona’s search remains centred on a left-footed centre-back. That specific requirement currently works against the prospect of a concrete move for the Tottenham player, despite the admiration he enjoys at the Camp Nou.
Laporte interest complicated by Athletic relations
Aymeric Laporte is another defender under consideration, but any potential deal is described as complicated.
Barcelona would have to negotiate with Athletic Bilbao, and relations between the two clubs have been strained in recent years. Tensions have grown in particular around the situation of Nico Williams, which has made direct dealings between the two institutions more difficult.
Those off-field dynamics are seen as a significant obstacle to progressing any move for Laporte, even though his left-footed profile and experience would fit what Barcelona are seeking in the event of Araujo’s departure.
No move unless Araujo leaves
For the moment, Barcelona’s position is described as firm: the club will not act in the centre-back market while Ronald Araujo remains part of the squad.
Only once a definitive decision is taken on the 25-year-old’s future will Barcelona begin formal efforts to identify and secure a replacement. Until then, plans to reinforce the defence will stay on standby, leaving Araujo’s situation as the key factor shaping the club’s defensive transfer strategy this summer.
