Inter Miami’s high-profile signing of Brazil midfielder Casemiro has triggered a formal investigation by Major League Soccer (MLS) amid claims the club may have breached league rules on player recruitment.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star joined Inter Miami on a free transfer on Wednesday after his contract at Old Trafford expired, linking up with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in one of the most star-studded squads in world football.
But MLS has confirmed it is now reviewing the circumstances of the deal following a complaint linked to the league’s controversial “discovery rights” mechanism.
League confirms probe into Casemiro deal
In a statement cited by UK newspaper The Sun, MLS said it had opened an inquiry into whether Inter Miami had violated regulations relating to negotiations for the 32-year-old.
The league said: “تقوم الرابطة بجمع جميع المعلومات ذات الصلة وستمتنع عن الادلاء بمزيد من التعليقات حتى اكتمال المراجعة”.
The investigation centres on who held priority rights to sign Casemiro under MLS rules and whether Inter Miami followed the required procedures before completing the move.
What are MLS ‘discovery rights’?
The case revolves around MLS’s “discovery rights” system, which gives clubs priority to negotiate with certain unattached or out-of-league international players.
Under the rules, a club that has filed a discovery claim on a player is granted the exclusive right within MLS to negotiate his signing. Other MLS teams are not permitted to enter talks with that player unless:
– they first acquire those discovery rights from the club that holds them, or
– they reach a formal agreement with that club over the rights.
In Casemiro’s case, LA Galaxy were the club that held his discovery rights, according to reports. That position would have put them in a powerful negotiating stance once Inter Miami decided to pursue the five-time Champions League winner.
Such rights are often traded between MLS teams for allocation money or other considerations, and disputes over their use have been a recurring feature of the league’s transfer landscape.
Settlement reached but details withheld
MLS confirmed that Inter Miami and LA Galaxy had already come to an arrangement over Casemiro’s discovery rights. However, the financial and contractual details of that settlement are being kept confidential until the inquiry concludes.
The statement added: “بينما توصل نادي انتر ميامي ونادي لوس انجلوس جالاكسي الى تسوية بشان اولوية اكتشاف المواهب للتعاقد مع كاسيميرو، سيتم الكشف عن الشروط عند انتهاء التحقيق في التلاعب”.
Reports suggest Inter Miami could ultimately be required to pay in the region of £750,000 to LA Galaxy in connection with those rights, although the final figure is expected to be determined and confirmed only once the league’s review is complete.
MLS said the fee that Inter Miami must pay Galaxy for Casemiro’s discovery rights will be finalised after the investigation has been wrapped up.
Another spotlight on Inter Miami’s star policy
The probe comes as Inter Miami continue to reshape their squad around some of the biggest names in modern football. Casemiro’s arrival adds further experience and profile to a team already built around Messi and Suarez, both former Barcelona team-mates.
The club, co-owned by David Beckham, has become a major magnet for high-profile players in recent transfer windows, helping to raise MLS’s global visibility.
However, the Casemiro case underlines how MLS’s distinctive roster and recruitment rules can complicate even free transfers, especially when more than one club sees value in signing the same international star.
For now, Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami stands, but the league’s investigation will determine whether any sanctions, adjustments or additional payments are required before the transfer can be considered fully compliant with MLS regulations.
