Sergio Ramos has stirred a fierce online debate after sharing what appeared to be a genuine photograph of himself embracing Argentina captain Lionel Messi – only for fans to discover the image was generated by artificial intelligence.
The image, posted on the former Spain defender’s Instagram account, showed him hugging his ex-Paris Saint-Germain team-mate in Argentina colours, with many initially convinced it was an authentic picture captured after the 2026 World Cup final.
However, social media users later pointed out that the photograph was not real, and had instead been created by AI to immortalise a moment that did happen in real life – but was never captured by a photographer.
Subsequent video clips, circulated online after the controversy erupted, confirmed that Ramos and Messi did share an embrace following the World Cup final. Because there was no still photograph documenting that instant, the former La Roja star turned to an AI-edited image to represent it on his Instagram feed.
AI giveaway: kit details don’t match
Fans began to question the authenticity of the image when they noticed several inconsistencies in Messi’s Argentina shirt.
One of the clearest signs was the absence of the official World Cup badge on the right sleeve – a standard feature on tournament jerseys. Observers also spotted that the back of the shirt did not match the official World Cup kit.
Instead of the current design, which uses one broad vertical stripe, Messi’s shirt in the picture featured two narrow vertical stripes on the back – a look that closely resembles the expected Argentina kit design for the 2024-25 season.
Another discrepancy was found in the typography used for Messi’s name and number. The AI image used an older font style, rather than the official lettering adopted for the World Cup.
These details combined convinced many that the image had been digitally created rather than captured by a photographer on the pitch.
Real moment, unreal image
The revelation led many users to conclude that the hug between Ramos and Messi had never actually taken place. But video evidence released later showed that the embrace was genuine – it was only the still image circulating on Ramos’s account that was artificial.
In effect, the AI creation served as a reconstruction of a real but undocumented moment between two of football’s defining figures of the past two decades.
For many supporters, the visual carried powerful symbolism: two players who spent years as fierce rivals in ferocious Clasico encounters between Real Madrid and Barcelona, later becoming team-mates at Paris Saint-Germain, and finally sharing a moment of mutual respect on the World Cup stage.
