Ghana centre-back Abdul Mumin is at the centre of an intense transfer tussle in Spain, with Getafe, Girona and Osasuna all vying to sign the free agent after his departure from Rayo Vallecano.
The 28-year-old, who recently returned from a serious knee injury and went to the 2026 World Cup with Ghana, is also attracting interest from clubs in France’s Ligue 1, the English Premier League and Major League Soccer, according to Footy-Africa.
Mumin turned down a contract extension on reduced wages at Rayo and is now weighing up his options ahead of the new season.
Spanish clubs lead the chase
Getafe, Girona and Osasuna have all moved to position themselves for Mumin’s signature following the expiry of his deal with Rayo Vallecano.
The defender joined Rayo in 2022 from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes and quickly became an important part of the Madrid club’s back line before a major setback halted his progress.
His standing in La Liga, combined with his status as a free agent, makes him an appealing prospect for clubs looking to reinforce their defence without paying a transfer fee.
A decision on his future is expected in the coming weeks, with the three Spanish sides understood to be pushing hardest at this stage.
Key role at Rayo cut short by serious injury
Mumin had established himself as a regular starter at Rayo Vallecano after his arrival from Vitoria Guimaraes, where he had developed a reputation as a reliable, ball-playing central defender.
However, he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that ruled him out for more than a year and stalled his momentum in Spain’s top flight.
The long-term injury meant he missed the bulk of two seasons and had to undertake a lengthy rehabilitation process before returning to full fitness.
Rayo offered him a contract extension but at reduced terms, which the player declined, opening the door for rival clubs across Europe and beyond to step in.
World Cup call-up highlights pedigree
Despite his extended absence from competitive action, Mumin’s quality has remained recognised at international level.
He returned to action towards the end of the 2025-26 campaign, making three La Liga appearances for Rayo as he worked his way back to match sharpness.
His recovery and previous performances were enough to earn him a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup with the Black Stars, although he did not feature in any matches during the tournament.
The call-up underlined the regard in which he is still held by national team selectors, even after a long spell on the sidelines.
Free-agent value and market interest
Born in Accra, Mumin is currently valued at around €3m by data site Transfermarkt, but as a free agent he is in a position to command a significant signing-on fee and negotiate favourable personal terms.
Clubs in Ligue 1, the Premier League and MLS are said to be monitoring developments closely, prepared to move if talks with the Spanish sides stall.
For now, though, the strongest interest appears to be concentrated in La Liga, where Getafe, Girona and Osasuna see an opportunity to secure an experienced defender entering what should be the peak years of his career.
With pre-season preparations under way and squads being finalised, Mumin’s next move is expected to be resolved shortly – and could prove one of the more astute defensive signings of the summer window.
