Malang Sarr has turned down five European offers and a chance to play Champions League football with RC Lens to join ambitious Saudi Pro League club NEOM, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.
The 27-year-old defender’s contract with Lens expired on 30 June and he opted not to sign an extension, bringing his two-year spell with the northern French side to an end just as they secured a place in next season’s Champions League.
Sarr, a France-born defender of Senegalese descent, has instead committed his future to the Saudi project at NEOM, a relatively new club in an expanding league that already includes former Arsenal and Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.
Turning down Champions League for Saudi Arabia
Lens had hoped to keep Sarr as they prepare for a return to Europe’s elite competition, but the centre-back chose to pursue a new challenge outside the continent.
His decision is notable given the level of interest from European clubs. Romano reports that Sarr rejected five proposals from teams in Europe before agreeing to join NEOM in the Saudi Pro League.
The move underlines the continuing pulling power of Saudi Arabia’s top flight, which has attracted a growing number of established European-based players in recent seasons through a combination of ambitious projects and lucrative contracts.
From Nice to Saudi Arabia via England and Portugal
A product of Nice’s academy, Sarr broke through in Ligue 1 as a teenager before earning a move to Chelsea. His time with the London club included loan spells in Portugal and back in France, where he featured for Porto and then Monaco, before joining Lens.
In Artois, he became a regular part of the squad known as the “Sang et Or” (Blood and Gold). Over two seasons he made 62 appearances in all competitions, contributing to Lens’ rise as one of Ligue 1’s most competitive sides.
Now, having already experienced top-flight football in France, England and Portugal, Sarr is preparing to test himself in a completely different environment and football culture in the Middle East.
Financial context and market value
Sarr’s market value is currently estimated at around €20m (£16.9m) by data site Transfermarkt.
At Lens, he earned an annual salary reported at €1.46m (about 949m CFA francs). While financial details of his contract at NEOM have not been made public, salaries in the Saudi Pro League have often far exceeded those typically on offer in mid-to-upper tier European clubs, particularly for players in their prime years.
