Asante Kotoko appoint South African Eric Tinkler as new head coach

Asante Kotoko have appointed experienced South African coach Eric Tinkler as their new head coach as the Ghanaian giants look to strengthen their technical leadership ahead of the upcoming football season.

The Porcupine Warriors confirmed Tinkler’s arrival in an official statement released on Friday, 17 July, describing the new manager as a “world-class coach” with extensive experience at the highest level of the game.

The club said the appointment was based on Tinkler’s strong coaching background, his success in top-flight football and his distinguished career as a player.

Tinkler arrives in Kumasi with more than 30 years of experience in elite football and a CAF A Licence. The Portuguese-South African brings with him a wealth of knowledge gained from both domestic and international football, having worked with some of South Africa’s leading clubs.

The former Bafana Bafana captain has previously managed Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits, building a reputation for tactical organisation, discipline and developing players.

During his time in management, Tinkler achieved success on the continental stage. He guided Orlando Pirates to the final of the CAF Champions League and also led SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final.

His record also includes domestic honours, including MTN8 titles and a Telkom Knockout trophy, achievements that have contributed to his standing as one of South Africa’s most experienced coaches.

Before moving into management, Tinkler enjoyed a successful playing career that saw him represent his country at major international competitions.

He won 48 caps for South Africa and captained Bafana Bafana during the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He was also part of the South African team that competed at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and was included in the historic squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.

At club level, Tinkler played outside South Africa, featuring for Barnsley FC in England, Cagliari Calcio in Italy and Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal.

Kotoko believe his combination of playing experience and coaching achievements makes him the right person to guide the club as they pursue greater success domestically and across Africa.

The club highlighted Tinkler’s tactical discipline, structured approach and ability to improve players as key reasons behind the decision to appoint him.

He will work alongside Director of Football Stanley Menzo as the club attempts to build a competitive squad capable of achieving sustained success in Ghanaian football and on the continental stage.

Kotoko Board Chairman James Osei Brown welcomed the appointment, saying the new coach brings valuable leadership qualities and a strong winning mentality.

Brown said Tinkler’s history of producing results and helping players develop made him a suitable choice to lead the club into its next era.

The appointment represents a clear statement of ambition from the Porcupine Warriors, who are aiming to establish greater stability and success under new technical direction.

With Tinkler now in charge, Kotoko will hope his experience from across Africa and Europe can help the club return to consistent domestic dominance while competing strongly in continental competitions.

The club has expressed confidence that his knowledge, methods and vision will play an important role in rebuilding a side capable of delivering long-term success.
