Algeria international Aïssa Mandi has officially ended his two-year spell at Lille, bidding an emotional farewell to the club’s supporters as he prepares for a return to Spanish football.
The 34-year-old defender is expected to join La Liga side Levante, subject to a medical, after bringing his time with the French club to a close.
Emotional goodbye to Lille
Mandi confirmed his departure with a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking everyone associated with Lille for their support during his stay.
The experienced centre-back expressed his gratitude to his teammates, the coaching staff, club employees and supporters, while pledging to continue following the club’s progress in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
“Thank you LOSC! After two wonderful years, it’s time for me to say goodbye! I thoroughly enjoyed playing for this club, alongside an exceptional group of players.
“Thank you to my teammates, the staff, everyone who works for the club every day, and of course, the fans for their support.
“I wish you all the best for the future and I’ll be your number one supporter in the Champions League next season. Once again, THANK YOU for everything.”
His message prompted an outpouring of appreciation from teammates and supporters, who paid tribute to his contribution over the past two seasons.
A consistent performer in France
Mandi leaves Lille after making 71 appearances, scoring one goal, while collecting 14 yellow cards and one red card.
His consistent performances earned him recognition as Lille’s Player of the Season, an award voted for by the club’s supporters.
The veteran defender became one of the leaders of Lille’s back line, helping the club secure Champions League qualification before deciding to embark on a new challenge in Spain.
Spain awaits
Mandi is now expected to complete a move to Levante, marking a return to Spanish football after previous spells in La Liga.
While his club future is set to continue in Spain, there has been no indication that the veteran defender plans to retire from international football with Algeria.
His departure also ends a successful second spell in French football following his earlier years at Stade de Reims.
Although his performances for Algeria have occasionally divided opinion, Mandi leaves Lille having firmly established himself as one of the club’s most reliable performers, with the admiration of supporters and teammates alike as he begins the next chapter of his career.
