Jordan Pickford has become England’s most experienced player at the FIFA World Cup after making his 18th appearance in the tournament during the Three Lions’ dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway.
The Everton goalkeeper reached the milestone as Thomas Tuchel’s side secured their place in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals following a tense encounter in Miami on 11 July.
Pickford has started every match for England during their campaign in North America, playing all six games as the team continues its pursuit of World Cup glory.
The 32-year-old’s record-breaking appearance saw him move ahead of former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who previously held the record with 17 World Cup matches since the 1990 tournament in Italy.
Shilton’s record had stood for more than three decades, dating back to England’s semi-final appearance at Italia ’90, where they were eliminated by Germany.
Pickford’s historic night came during a challenging match against Norway. England fell behind after Andreas Schjelderup produced a spectacular strike to give the opposition the lead in Miami Gardens.
However, the Three Lions responded in extra time, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice to complete a comeback victory and secure a semi-final meeting with Argentina.
The result ensured Pickford’s record-breaking appearance was part of another important moment in England’s World Cup history.
The goalkeeper’s achievement places him above other notable England players who have represented the country on football’s biggest stage. Harry Kane has now reached 17 World Cup appearances, matching Shilton’s previous mark, while John Stones has made 16 appearances and Marcus Rashford has featured in 15 matches.
Jordan Henderson remains the only England player to have participated in four separate World Cups, although his involvement in the 2026 tournament has ended.
The experienced midfielder suffered a broken wrist while celebrating England’s victory over Mexico and will play no further role in the competition.
While Pickford continues to add to his World Cup record, England captain Harry Kane remains the country’s leading scorer in the tournament.
Kane has now scored 14 World Cup goals, maintaining his position as England’s highest scorer on the global stage. Bellingham, meanwhile, has moved onto seven World Cup goals after an impressive run that has seen him score six times during this summer’s competition.
The contributions of Pickford, Kane and Bellingham have been central to England’s progress through the 2026 tournament.
Pickford’s consistency between the posts has provided stability throughout the campaign, while Bellingham’s attacking influence proved decisive against Norway when England needed a response after falling behind.
The goalkeeper’s latest appearance also strengthens his place among England’s greatest World Cup performers. His record-breaking night adds another chapter to a career that has seen him become a key figure for the national team across three World Cup tournaments.
As England prepare for their semi-final against Argentina, Pickford will continue to be a crucial part of Tuchel’s plans, carrying the distinction of being the country’s most-used player at the World Cup.
