2026 World Cup: Golden Boot race tight as Mbappe and Messi share seven-goal lead

The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is finely balanced, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe level on seven goals each as the tournament enters its decisive knockout phase in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Mbappe and Messi remain the headline acts of the competition, both delivering consistently on football’s biggest stage, while a cluster of elite forwards including Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Vinicius Junior and Cristiano Ronaldo continue to chase the leading pair.

Mbappe strengthened his position after scoring his seventh goal of the tournament in France’s Round of 16 victory over Paraguay.

The Paris forward also holds a narrow advantage in the official standings due to his two assists, which act as a tiebreaker.

Messi, meanwhile, remains equally dangerous in front of goal.

The Argentina legend also sits on seven goals, having maintained his scoring form throughout the competition. He previously struck against Cape Verde and continues to be central to Argentina’s attacking rhythm.

The duel between the two superstars has defined the tournament so far, with neither player managing to pull clear in the outright scoring charts. Instead, fine margins such as assists and efficiency are separating them.

Behind them, England captain Harry Kane and Norway striker Erling Haaland are both firmly in contention with five goals apiece, keeping pressure on the leaders as the knockout rounds progress.

Further down the rankings, Ousmane Dembele, Vinicius Junior and several others remain in the hunt, ensuring the Golden Boot race remains open heading into the final stages of the tournament.
