Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has hailed Morocco as a well-organised and highly talented side ahead of their Round of 16 meeting at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference in Houston on Friday, Marsch acknowledged the challenge awaiting his team, describing the Atlas Lions as one of the tournament’s most disciplined and tactically impressive sides.
The Canadian coach said Morocco have developed into a team capable of adapting to different situations while consistently maximising the qualities of their players.
Marsch impressed by Morocco’s confidence
Marsch singled out Morocco’s tactical organisation as one of the defining features of their World Cup campaign, praising the structure and balance they have displayed throughout the tournament.
He also highlighted the confidence with which the Atlas Lions have approached their matches, revealing that their Round of 32 victory over the Netherlands particularly caught his attention.
“Their level of confidence and the boldness with which they approached this match particularly caught my attention,” Marsch said.
Despite the praise for Morocco, the former Leeds United manager expressed confidence in his own squad, insisting Canada understand the level of performance required to compete against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
He believes his players are fully aware of the magnitude of the occasion and are determined to produce a display capable of matching Morocco across the pitch.
Johnston recalls Qatar experience
Canada defender Alistair Johnston also reflected on the challenge ahead, drawing on his previous experience of facing Morocco at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The full-back warned his teammates about the passionate support the Atlas Lions consistently receive at major international tournaments, describing the atmosphere surrounding Morocco as one of the most intense in world football.
Johnston also praised the progress Canada have made in recent years, saying the current squad is enjoying one of the most encouraging periods in the nation’s football history.
He described the Round of 16 encounter as a valuable opportunity to test themselves against one of the world’s leading football nations.
“It’s an exciting challenge against a true giant of world football,” Johnston said.
Quarter-final place at stake
With a place in the quarter-finals on the line, both nations enter the knockout clash knowing there is little margin for error.
Canada will be aiming to continue their historic World Cup run, while Morocco will look to build on an impressive campaign that has earned widespread praise for its tactical discipline, confidence and consistency on football’s biggest stage.
