The reigning world champions arrived in Miami as overwhelming favourites after topping Group J with a perfect record, but they were pushed to the limit by a fearless Cabo Verde side that once again proved why they have been one of the stories of the competition.
Cabo Verde reached the knockout stage after finishing second in Group H behind Spain, securing famous results against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to make history by progressing beyond the group stage on their World Cup debut.

Messi’s corner in the 111th minute was met by Cristian Romero, whose powerful header deflected unto a Cabo verde defender and found its way at the back of the net to restore the holders’ advantage and ultimately secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
