Argentina survived a spirited challenge from Cabo Verde to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory in one of the tournament’s most memorable knockout ties.
The reigning world champions arrived in Miami as overwhelming favourites after topping Group J with a perfect record, but they were pushed to the limit by a fearless Cabo Verde side that once again proved why they have been one of the stories of the competition.
Cabo Verde reached the knockout stage after finishing second in Group H behind Spain, securing famous results against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to make history by progressing beyond the group stage on their World Cup debut.
Their remarkable run had already captured the imagination of football fans, and they showed little sign of being overawed by the occasion.
Argentina dominated possession early on and were rewarded in the 29th minute when Lionel Messi collected a pass from Lisandro Martínez before firing home his 20th World Cup goal to give the holders a deserved lead. The strike also extended Messi’s remarkable scoring streak at the tournament.
Cabo Verde refused to be intimidated and responded with determination after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Deroy Duarte found the net to level the contest, stunning the Argentine supporters and ensuring the underdogs were right back in the tie.
With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, the match headed into extra time. Argentina regained the lead almost immediately after the restart as Lisandro Martínez smashed home in the 93rd minute, seemingly putting Lionel Scaloni’s side back in control.
But Cabo Verde’s remarkable resilience shone through once again. In the 103rd minute, Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a sensational effort into the net to make it 2-2, sparking fresh belief among the African nation’s players and supporters.
Just as penalties appeared inevitable, Argentina found the decisive breakthrough. Messi’s corner in the 111th minute was met by Cristian Romero, whose powerful header deflected unto a Cabo verde defender and found its way at the back of the net to restore the holders’ advantage and ultimately secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
The result underlined Argentina’s attacking quality but also exposed moments of vulnerability against a side that played with courage and belief throughout the contest.
Their ability to withstand Cabo Verde’s relentless challenge ultimately proved decisive as they kept their hopes of retaining the World Cup alive.
Although the defeat ended Cabo Verde’s historic World Cup adventure, the Blue Sharks leave the tournament with enormous credit. After navigating a difficult group and pushing one of the favourites to extra time in the knockout stages, they enhanced their growing reputation on the international stage and demonstrated they can compete with football’s elite.
Argentina now turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they will face Egypt after surviving one of the sternest tests of their title defence so far. For Cabo Verde, the campaign may have ended in defeat, but it will be remembered as a landmark chapter in the nation’s football history.
