Genoa complete signing of rising Swiss-Cameroonian talent Meichtry

Genoa have completed the signing of highly rated Swiss-Cameroonian midfielder Franz-Ethan Meichtry from FC Thun in a permanent deal, securing one of Europe’s emerging young talents ahead of the new season.

The 20-year-old has signed a contract running until June 2030 after agreeing a transfer valued at around €3 million. The move marks a significant step in his development following a breakthrough campaign in Switzerland.

Meichtry made a strong impression last season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in 35 appearances in the Swiss Super League.

His performances were central to Thun’s impressive domestic campaign, where he emerged as one of the standout young players in the competition.

Genoa announced the transfer across their official social media platforms, confirming that an agreement had been reached with Thun for the midfielder’s permanent registration.

The Italian club described the deal as part of their long-term project to strengthen the squad with emerging talent.

The club also confirmed that Meichtry is a member of the Swiss Under-21 national team, where he has already made seven appearances and scored once.

His progress at international youth level has added to his growing reputation as one of Switzerland’s most promising midfield prospects.

Meichtry’s arrival comes at a time when Genoa are reshaping their midfield options following the departure of Ruslan Malinovskyi.

The youngster is expected to compete for a place alongside Amorim and Patrizio Masini in supporting or partnering Morten Frendrup in the centre of the pitch.

The Italian side see Meichtry as a long-term investment, with club officials reportedly impressed not only by his technical ability but also by his attacking contribution from midfield and his consistency throughout the season in Switzerland.

Before his move, Meichtry had been regarded as one of the rising stars of the Swiss league.

His valuation on transfer market platforms had risen to around €5 million following his performances, reflecting growing interest from clubs across Europe.

Born in 2005, Meichtry has progressed quickly through the ranks and is now set to test himself in Serie A, one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

His move to Genoa represents both a step up in competition and an opportunity to further develop in a more demanding tactical environment.

For Genoa, the signing fits into a wider strategy of recruiting young, versatile players capable of developing into key figures over time.

The club will hope Meichtry can adapt quickly and contribute to their midfield rebuild as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

As the new season approaches, attention will now turn to how quickly the Swiss-Cameroonian midfielder can settle in Italy and whether he can translate his promising form from Thun onto the Serie A stage.
