FIFA has appointed Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev to officiate Algeria’s crucial final Group J match against Austria, with both nations still battling for a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The encounter, scheduled for June 28, is set to be one of the most important fixtures in the group, with qualification still hanging in the balance for both sides.
Algeria and Austria enter the match level on points after recording one victory and one defeat each in their opening two matches, making the outcome potentially decisive in determining who progresses to the knockout stage.

Tantashev, 42, has built a strong reputation through his performances in several major competitions, including the Saudi Pro League, AFC Champions League and the Olympic Games.
His extensive experience in high-pressure matches has earned him recognition as one of the continent’s leading referees.
Among the notable matches he has officiated was the final between Al Ahli and Machida Zelvia, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Riyad Mahrez and his teammates.
While Tantashev has accumulated significant experience at both club and international level, the 2026 FIFA World Cup marks his first appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
He made his World Cup debut earlier in the competition during Morocco’s 1-0 victory over Scotland, a match that passed without major controversy and featured just two yellow cards.
His career statistics highlight a firm but controlled approach to officiating. Across his professional career, Tantashev has issued 1,256 yellow cards and 33 red cards, demonstrating consistency and authority in his decision-making.
FIFA has also confirmed the remainder of the officiating team for the Group J showdown.
Fellow Uzbek officials Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin will serve as assistant referees, while Mexican referee Katia Garcia has been appointed fourth official.
Sandra Ramirez will take on the role of reserve assistant referee.
