The Algerian national team has arrived in the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, receiving a large and emotional welcome from supporters in Kansas City as preparations for the tournament intensify.
Led by coach Vladimir Petković, the “Desert Warriors” landed in Missouri early on Monday morning following an approximately 11-hour direct flight from Algiers.
A large number of Algerian supporters gathered inside the airport to greet the squad upon arrival, creating a celebratory atmosphere for the players as they begin the final stage of their World Cup preparations.
The warm reception appeared to lift the mood within the delegation after the long journey, with fans enthusiastically welcoming stars including captain Riyad Mahrez and the rest of the squad selected for the tournament.
Algeria qualified directly for the 2026 World Cup after finishing top of Group 7 in the African qualifiers.
The North African side collected 25 points from eight wins, one draw and one defeat, finishing ahead of Uganda national football team, Mozambique national football team, Guinea national football team, Botswana national football team and Somalia national football team.
Final Preparations Underway
The Algerian squad arrived in the United States after securing a morale-boosting friendly victory against Netherlands national football team.
The match was decided late on after Anis Hadj Moussa scored in the 86th minute to hand Algeria a narrow win.
That result has added further optimism around the team as preparations continue before the start of the tournament.
Petkovic’s side are expected to begin full training immediately in Kansas City before playing one final friendly against Bolivia national football team on 10 June.
The coaching staff are aiming to maintain the team’s momentum and competitive sharpness before Algeria begin their World Cup campaign.
Tough Group Challenge Awaits
Algeria face a difficult assignment in Group 10, where they will open the tournament against defending champions Argentina national football team on 17 June.
The South American side will once again be led by captain Lionel Messi.
Algeria will then face Jordan national football team on 23 June before completing the group stage against Austria national football team on 28 June.
Jordan’s appearance at the tournament is historic, with the nation participating in the World Cup finals for the first time.
For Algeria, the tournament marks their fifth World Cup appearance, with hopes growing that the current generation can emulate the achievements of the side that reached the last 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
During that tournament, Algeria pushed eventual champions Germany national football team close before being eliminated after a difficult contest in the knockout stage.
The current squad arrives in the United States carrying renewed belief after an impressive qualification campaign and recent positive performances in friendly matches.
