WAFCON 2026 build-up hit as Cameroon friendly against Morocco cancelled

Cameroon have been forced to revise their preparation plans for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a scheduled friendly against Morocco was cancelled.

The fixture, which had initially been planned for early June, was expected to form part of the team’s build-up to the continental tournament.

Players had already received their call-ups ahead of the match, signalling that preparations were well underway.

However, the game has now been called off, leaving a gap in Cameroon’s preparation schedule at a crucial stage of their AFCON build-up.

The cancellation represents a setback for the technical staff, who had been counting on the match against Morocco to test combinations, assess player fitness and fine-tune tactical plans before the competition begins.

Despite the disappointment, the coaching team has not abandoned plans to keep the squad active.

Discussions are already underway regarding the possibility of arranging another training camp or alternative friendly fixtures to ensure the team remains sharp ahead of the tournament.

The disruption comes at an important moment, with the Indomitable Lionesses needing to maximise every opportunity to prepare for one of the biggest competitions in African women’s football.

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 is scheduled to begin on 25 July, and will be hosted in Morocco.

That adds further significance to Cameroon’s preparation plans, as they will be competing in conditions similar to those of their intended friendly opponent.

The cancellation also means Cameroon lose a valuable opportunity to measure themselves against a strong continental rival ahead of the tournament.

Friendly matches at this stage are often used to assess squad depth and build cohesion within the team.

For now, attention turns to how quickly Cameroon can reorganise their schedule and secure alternative opposition or training opportunities before the tournament kicks off.

The coaching staff are expected to prioritise maintaining the team’s rhythm, ensuring that players remain in competitive condition despite the unexpected change in plans.

Cameroon will head into the AFCON hoping to make a strong impression, but the build-up has now taken an unexpected turn, forcing adjustments in their final weeks of preparation.
