Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet has finished as the top scorer in the 2025-26 CAF Champions League after scoring six goals for Al Ahly SC during the tournament, despite the Egyptian side failing to progress beyond the quarter-finals.
The Confederation of African Football confirmed the award after the conclusion of the competition, which saw Mamelodi Sundowns FC crowned African champions following victory over AS FAR in the final.
The South African club secured the title after winning the first leg 1-0 at home before earning a 1-1 draw in Morocco in the return match to complete a successful continental campaign.
While Sundowns celebrated the championship, Trezeguet emerged as one of the standout individual performers of the tournament after leading the scoring charts with six goals.
The 31-year-old forward played a central role in Al Ahly’s run in the competition and delivered decisive performances during both the group stage and knockout rounds.
Trezeguet opened his scoring account with two goals against JS Kabylie during the group phase. He later added another goal against Moroccan side AS FAR in the same stage of the competition.
The Egyptian international continued his impressive form by scoring twice against Young Africans SC, further strengthening his position at the top of the scoring table.
His sixth and final goal of the campaign came against Espérance Sportive de Tunis in the second leg of the quarter-finals.
Despite Trezeguet’s contributions, Al Ahly were unable to advance to the semi-finals. The Cairo club lost 1-0 in the first leg in Tunisia before suffering a 3-2 defeat in the return fixture at Cairo Stadium, ending their hopes of another African title.
Trezeguet returned to Al Ahly at the start of the current season after leaving Turkish club Trabzonspor following the completion of his loan spell with Al Rayyan SC.
The forward brought extensive European experience back to Egypt, having previously represented clubs including Aston Villa FC, RSC Anderlecht and Kasımpaşa SK.
His performances in the CAF Champions League have added another achievement to a career that has seen him become one of Egypt’s most recognisable footballers both domestically and internationally.
Trezeguet is now preparing for the next major stage of his international career with Egypt national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.
The winger previously represented Egypt at the 2018 World Cup and has built an impressive international record, making 94 appearances for the national team and scoring 23 goals.
Although Al Ahly’s continental campaign ended earlier than expected, Trezeguet’s performances ensured he remained one of the defining figures of this season’s CAF Champions League.
