Cameroonian striker Bil Nsongo produced the defining performance of Deportivo La Coruña’s season by scoring twice in a 2-0 victory over Valladolid to secure the club’s return to La Liga after an eight-year absence.
The 21-year-old forward struck both goals in the first half at the José Zorrilla stadium on Sunday as Deportivo clinched automatic promotion from Spain’s Segunda División with one match still to play.
For the historic Spanish side, the victory marked the end of a difficult period that included four seasons outside professional football in the Primera RFEF before eventually rebuilding their way back to the top flight.
The night also represented another major breakthrough for a young Cameroonian talent beginning to make his mark in European football.
Nsongo’s decisive display confirmed his growing importance at Deportivo, where he has quickly become one of the club’s key attacking players.
The striker now has six goals and one assist since making his professional debut.
The promotion-winning performance at Riazor further strengthened his reputation as one of the emerging African players to watch in Spain.
Deportivo, one of Spain’s traditional clubs, had endured years of instability despite previously winning one La Liga title, two Copa del Rey trophies and three Spanish Super Cups.
Their return to La Liga completes a remarkable recovery project after years spent away from the elite level of Spanish football.
The club entered the match knowing promotion was within reach, but Nsongo removed any uncertainty with a clinical first-half brace that settled the contest against a Valladolid side with little left to play for.
His goals sparked celebrations among Deportivo supporters, who have waited nearly a decade to see their club return to Spain’s highest division.
The result also confirmed Deportivo’s rise at a time when several rivals chasing promotion struggled to keep pace.
Almería suffered a 3-1 defeat against Sporting and remained on 71 points in third place.
Málaga, on 70 points, could only manage a 1-1 draw against Racing, while Las Palmas also drew with Zaragoza.
Castellón strengthened their play-off hopes with a 1-0 victory over Huesca thanks to a goal from Camara, while Burgos and Eibar also stayed mathematically alive in the race for promotion.
At the opposite end of the table, Zaragoza, Cultural Leonesa and Huesca were relegated during a dramatic penultimate round played simultaneously across Spain.
However, the main story of the evening belonged to Deportivo and their young Cameroonian striker.
Nsongo’s rise reflects the growing influence of African players in European football, particularly young francophone talents increasingly making an impact in Spain’s professional leagues.
