Senegal unveil provisional World Cup squad with surprise teenage inclusion

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has named teenage midfielder Bara Sapaco Ndiaye as the surprise inclusion in his provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining the country’s growing confidence in its emerging generation ahead of the tournament in North America.

The 18-year-old earns his first senior call-up after progressing from local football in Senegal to continue his development in neighbouring Gambia with Gambinos before eventually joining German giants FC Bayern Munich.

Ndiaye’s selection is one of the biggest talking points from the 28-man squad announced by Thiaw, who must reduce the group to 26 players before the start of the competition in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

While the core of Senegal’s experienced squad remains intact, the inclusion of the young midfielder signals a willingness to invest in fresh talent as the Lions of Teranga prepare for their fourth World Cup appearance.

Senegal have been drawn in Group I alongside France, Norway and Iraq.

Their campaign begins on 16 June against France at MetLife Stadium before further group matches against Norway on 22 June and Iraq on 26 June in Canada.

The squad also marks the return of Senegal star Sadio Mane, who had previously announced his retirement from international football several months ago.

The forward is expected to play a central role again after helping Senegal maintain its status as one of Africa’s leading football nations in recent years.

Thiaw has largely retained the spine of the side that represented the country during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with experienced names such as Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, Pape Matar Sarr and Nicolas Jackson all included.

However, Ndiaye’s emergence provides one of the clearest signs yet of Senegal’s long-term planning.

The midfielder’s rise from local football structures in Senegal to one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs reflects the increasingly global reach of African talent development systems.

It also reinforces Senegal’s reputation for producing technically gifted young footballers capable of transitioning rapidly onto the international stage.

For Thiaw, balancing youthful promise with tournament experience could be vital if Senegal are to progress beyond the group stage.

The West Africans reached the knockout rounds at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and are aiming to build on that momentum at the expanded 2026 edition.

The final squad announcement is expected to generate further debate, particularly around which two players will miss out before the tournament begins.
