Coventry City are considering making Frank Onyeka’s move permanent after the club secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.
The Championship winners confirmed the situation surrounding the Nigerian midfielder as part of their retained and released list following the end of the 2025/2026 campaign. Onyeka’s future has become one of the main areas of discussion after the midfielder impressed during his loan spell in the second half of the season.
Coventry completed their return to the top flight after earning a decisive 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Matchday 43, a result that sealed promotion and sparked celebrations among supporters. The achievement marked another major step in the club’s resurgence under manager Frank Lampard.
Attention has now turned towards preparations for life in the Premier League, with the club already beginning to shape its squad for next season. Onyeka appears likely to be part of those plans.
In a statement released on the club’s official website, Coventry confirmed they hold the option to complete a permanent transfer for the midfielder when his current loan agreement expires on 1 July.
The 27-year-old joined the Sky Blues from Brentford on transfer deadline day during the winter transfer window. Reports surrounding the deal suggested Coventry would be required to sign him permanently if promotion to the Premier League was achieved.
With that objective now secured, a final decision on the player’s future is expected in the coming weeks.
Onyeka made 14 appearances during his time at Coventry and contributed one goal and one assist as the club mounted a successful push for automatic promotion. His displays in midfield quickly earned him an important role during the closing stages of the season.
The Nigerian international became known for his energy, pressing ability and disciplined performances in the centre of the pitch, qualities that strengthened Coventry’s midfield during a crucial period of the campaign.
A permanent move would also provide Onyeka with another opportunity to establish himself in the Premier League after previous spells with Brentford.
The midfielder moved to Brentford in 2021 after a successful period with Danish side FC Midtjylland, where he won league titles and built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most reliable midfielders.
Although he showed signs of promise during his time with Brentford, injuries and managerial changes affected his ability to secure a consistent role in the side. His temporary switch to Coventry, however, helped revive his momentum at a key stage of his career.
Onyeka remains an important figure for Nigeria’s national team and continues to be valued for his aggressive pressing style and work rate in midfield.
Coventry’s promotion may now offer him a fresh platform to relaunch his Premier League career at a club where he has already earned the trust and appreciation of both the coaching staff and supporters.
The Sky Blues are expected to continue assessing their squad options ahead of their return to England’s top division, but Onyeka’s performances during the promotion run-in appear to have placed him firmly in contention for a longer stay at the club.
