Haaland praises Elliot Anderson after Manchester City edge Leipzig in Champions League

Erling Haaland praised Manchester City team-mate Elliot Anderson after the England midfielder impressed in Wednesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Leipzig.

Haaland, who scored the decisive goal, said Anderson had made an excellent start to life at Manchester City after joining the club last summer.

“He was amazing. It is a great start to his career at Manchester City,” Haaland told TNT Sports. “That is honestly what you expect from him – to come straight in and put in a really good performance.

“But it is not easy. You need some time to adapt to everything. He was impressive, and all respect to him.”

Haaland said his main priority was helping Manchester City secure victories, although he believes the team must improve after allowing Leipzig to recover twice.

“The most important thing for me is helping the team win, and I managed to do that today,” he added. “But I think we need to put in more effort.”

According to comments carried by the official UEFA website, Haaland said Manchester City should have been more aggressive after taking the lead.

“When we were 1-0 up, we should have pressed more to try to score the second goal, and maybe the third,” he said. “That is what we have to do as a club. We have to work on improving that.”

Manchester City moved ahead through an own goal from Castello Lukeba in the 37th minute, but Leipzig levelled at the start of the second half through Ridle Baku.

Enzo Fernandez restored the visitors’ advantage in the 58th minute, only for Antonio Nusa to equalise for Leipzig three minutes later.

Haaland then settled the match in the 78th minute, finishing after receiving a pass from Anderson.

The result gave Manchester City nine points from four matches and lifted them to seventh in the Champions League league-phase table. It also strengthened their prospects of reaching the last 16 automatically, with the top eight teams progressing directly to the next round.

The listed fixtures for 7 November 2026 include Leipzig against Augsburg in the Bundesliga and Nottingham Forest against Manchester City in the Premier League.
