Ruben Amorim has challenged AC Milan to produce greater consistency when they host Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday, despite their positive result in the Derby della Madonnina.
Milan have taken only one victory from their first three league-phase matches, beating Salzburg after defeats by Benfica and Bournemouth. The Rossoneri have also won just one of their past six European fixtures, drawing one and losing four, since a run of five successive Champions League victories between October 2024 and January 2025.
Ferencvaros arrive in Italy with a perfect record in this season’s Europa League, having won all three of their matches. A fourth successive victory in major European competition would be their first since the 1967-68 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, when they won six in a row on their way to the final.
Amorim said Saturday’s derby win must provide a platform for Milan to improve their performances in Europe.
“This is the Europa League. For us, it’s a very important game. More than the result, we need to maintain that consistency,” said Amorim.
“We were consistent during the game. It’s a big step we need to have. Doesn’t matter rotations, players on the pitch.
“We need to be a very good team and win, and our goal is to go all the way in this competition.”
The Milan manager acknowledged that his side’s results have been difficult to predict, regardless of the competition or the players selected.
“We can lose any game; we can win any game. This is the characteristic of this team. It depends on how we face the game,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s Serie A, Serie B, or Europa League. We can win any game and, at the same time, lose any game.
“Especially now that everyone knows everyone, the players have technical abilities, and coaches have the tools and footage to prepare for the games.”
Milan have faced Hungarian opposition only twice before. Both meetings came against Gyori ETO in the last 16 of the 1967-68 Cup Winners’ Cup, with the first ending 2-2 in Hungary before a 1-1 draw in Italy.
Ferencvaros’ record away to Italian clubs is also limited. Their only victory came in March 1965, when they won 2-1 against Roma in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
They have not won any of their four away matches against Italian opponents since then, drawing two and losing two.
