Mabokgwane explains why Orlando Pirates are yet to renew Sibisi’s contract

Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi is still waiting to sign a new contract, with his current deal reportedly due to expire at the end of the season.

The defender remains an important member of the Buccaneers squad, but the Soweto club has yet to complete negotiations over an extension for the player.

Sibisi has played a key role in the Pirates defence since joining the club in 2022 and has won eight trophies during his time with the team. His contract situation has therefore raised questions about his long-term future, despite his status as captain and one of the senior figures in the squad.

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane believes the delay may reflect a deliberate policy from the club rather than a lack of appreciation for Sibisi’s contribution.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Mabokgwane praised the Pirates leadership for the way it has combined emerging players with more experienced members of the team.

“Firstly, I must commend the Orlando Pirates leadership because they have transformed the squad. You can see there are a lot of young players in the squad and that has not disturbed the flow in any way. You can see that there is a handful of senior players, so that’s something that’s difficult to do for any young team, to blend in the young blood with the seniors. They’ve done a tremendous job,” he told Soccer Laduma.

Why Pirates may be delaying

Mabokgwane said Pirates had not traditionally been inclined to resolve contract matters too far in advance. He suggested that approach could help maintain competition within the squad and ensure players continue to perform at their highest level.

“With regards to Sibisi, the team does not really like to do things early, from my experience, which is also good because it keeps players pushing until the very end,” Mabokgwane said.

He added that giving a player an extension too soon could affect the motivation that drives performances.

“Sibisi is one of the senior players, but it’s good what they do at the club. Sometimes to offer you a contract or an extension too early takes away that hunger and desire to keep on pushing. At a club like Pirates, competition is high, so you always have to be on top of your game.”

Sibisi’s future remains unresolved, but Mabokgwane’s comments indicate that the absence of a new agreement should not necessarily be viewed as a sign that the club has decided against retaining its captain.
