Luis Enrique warns Paris Saint-Germain that Villarreal will pose a serious Champions League test

Luis Enrique says Villarreal deserved better results in the Champions League and has warned Paris Saint-Germain that recent victories over Manchester City and Barcelona will count for nothing when the teams meet on 3 November 2026.

Paris Saint-Germain are on a run of 10 successive wins, but Enrique insists his players must maintain their ambition, work rate and intensity against a Villarreal side he believes has impressed against Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

“Every competition gives us the chance to see players in different situations and get to know them better,” Enrique said. “We are always open to giving opportunities to young players who have this quality.”

Asked what made him most proud during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, he added: “The most positive thing is becoming more ambitious every day. That means everyone at the club continues to raise their ambitions. That is the most important and positive aspect for me. The club is different, and that makes me feel very comfortable.”

Enrique rejected the idea that his side’s recent results would give them an advantage.

“If you think the results we have achieved recently will help you win tomorrow, you are making a big mistake,” he said. “We need to show our ambition, work hard and run a lot against a good team like Villarreal. They have had a very difficult start against extremely strong opponents. They are a good team with an excellent manager. We must be ready from the first minute. Previous results will have no effect on what happens.”

Despite injuries and Paris Saint-Germain’s position at the top of the table, Enrique said he would not take extra precautions. “There are important points at stake,” he said. “Our focus is on performing well throughout the game, regardless of the competition or which players take part. Villarreal will make things difficult, and it will be hard to overcome their defensive pressure and structure. This is the type of match I like.”

On the winning run, he said: “You are not a bad coach when you lose, nor are you a genius when you win 10 games in a row. That is not the right way to work. When you are in a strong position, it is because you have a great club supporting you, excellent players and a wonderful team spirit. I am very happy.”

Enrique also praised Illia Zabarnyi, saying the young defender had adapted well, trusted his physical ability and technical skills, and contributed to building play. He added that a player’s first year at a new club is difficult, but Zabarnyi was improving and would become increasingly important.

The Paris Saint-Germain manager praised Inigo Perez, Villarreal’s young coach, for refusing to make excuses. Villarreal reached a European final last season, played well against Liverpool and competed strongly with Borussia Dortmund, while also beating Napoli.

“Villarreal’s decision to appoint him was correct,” Enrique said. “He wants to play good football and keep possession, which will force us to produce our best.”

He said Villarreal’s defeat by Espanyol was part of the learning process for a new project, adding that the club had faced four strong opponents but would meet weaker sides in its next four matches.

“Results judge football, but Inigo has shown his character,” Enrique said. “He has everything needed to become a great coach. The important thing is to remain faithful to your principles and not lose your identity because of defeat. I am convinced a major coaching career awaits him.”
