Borussia Dortmund came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich, despite the hosts dominating possession, chances and territory at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern took control after losing Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry to injuries in the space of two minutes. Saibari went off in the 29th minute after a collision with Gregor Kobel, while Gnabry was replaced by Josip Stanisic two minutes later. The club said Saibari had suffered a syndesmosis tear in his right ankle and Gnabry an injury to the muscle at the back of his left thigh. Neither player has a confirmed return date.
Dortmund thought they had taken the lead through Jobe Bellingham in the 34th minute, but the goal was ruled out following a video review. Bayern went ahead four minutes later when Konrad Laimer capitalised on a weak pass from Felix Nmecha towards Daniel Svensson and scored at the second attempt.
Harry Kane missed the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 56th minute. Dortmund levelled four minutes later, with Carney Chukwuemeka crossing for Serhou Guirassy to finish first time at the near post with his only shot of the game.
Dayot Upamecano restored Bayern’s lead in the 66th minute, converting after Kane headed Joshua Kimmich’s corner back across goal from the far post. But two substitutes combined to rescue a point for Dortmund in the 89th minute, as Konstantinos Karetsas supplied Fabio Silva for a finish at the far post.
Bayern recorded 23 shots to Dortmund’s 12, including 18 attempts from inside the area compared with seven for the visitors. They also had 56% possession and completed 603 passes to Dortmund’s 483. However, only five of Bayern’s shots were on target, compared with six for Dortmund.
Kane had six attempts without hitting the target, while Michael Olise also failed to put any of his five shots on goal. Bayern goalkeeper Daniel Peretz made four saves and Gregor Kobel three. Dortmund’s Guirassy and Fabio Silva had four shots between them, with three on target and two goals.
Nico Schlotterbeck won all six of his duels and made four tackles for Dortmund, while Kouakou Joane Gadou made five tackles. Joshua Kimmich completed 92 passes, Aleksandar Pavlovic 87, and Alphonso Davies completed five dribbles from 11 attempts.
Dortmund manager Niko Kovac’s substitutions proved decisive. Marcel Sabitzer and Karetsas came on in the 67th minute, Fabio Silva in the 76th, and Julian Ryerson and Samuele Inacio in the 87th. Bayern brought on Lennart Karl for Olise in the 84th minute, five minutes before the equaliser.
Guirassy, who played all 90 minutes, was awarded an SNA rating of 8.5, the highest of the match. Upamecano received 8.0, while Olise and Kane were rated 7.5 and 7.0 respectively.
Both clubs remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga and have 18 points after eight matches. Bayern lead on goal difference, +19 to Dortmund’s +8, with Freiburg third, two points behind.
