Manchester City suffered a second consecutive Premier League defeat as Brighton won 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Yasin Ayari, the Swedish midfielder of Tunisian descent, scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute.
City were unable to find a way through Brighton’s defence during the remaining 90 minutes, extending a disappointing run in the league despite playing in front of their home supporters.
The result also gave Brighton revenge for their midweek elimination from the English League Cup. Manchester City had knocked them out on Wednesday after winning 4-3 on penalties.
Manchester City remain top of the Premier League with 21 points, but their position is now at risk. Arsenal have the same points total and will move ahead of them if they avoid defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.
Brighton’s victory lifted them to 19 points and third place in the table.
