Türkiye’s hopes of progressing at the 2026 World Cup have come to an end before the conclusion of the group stage, despite one round of matches still remaining.
The elimination has generated significant debate among supporters, particularly because the expanded tournament format offers additional qualification routes through the ranking of third-placed teams. However, a combination of results and standings has left the Turkish side with no mathematical path to the knockout phase.
The 2026 World Cup is being staged under a new format, featuring 48 teams divided into 12 groups. The top two teams in each group automatically advance to the round of 32, while the eight best third-placed sides across all groups also secure places in the knockout rounds.
Consecutive Defeats Leave Türkiye at the Bottom
Türkiye’s campaign began with a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Australia in their opening Group D fixture. Their situation worsened in the second round when they suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Paraguay in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Those back-to-back defeats left the side known as “The Red and White” rooted to the bottom of the group without a single point.
At the top of Group D, the United States has already guaranteed qualification after collecting six points from its opening two matches. Australia and Paraguay sit between the United States and Türkiye on three points each, with the two sides set to meet in a decisive final-round encounter.
While Türkiye still has one remaining match against the United States, the standings mean their tournament fate has already been sealed.
Why Qualification Is No Longer Possible
Even if Türkiye were to defeat the United States in their final group game on Friday, 26 June, they would only be able to reach three points.
That total would not be enough to catch the United States, which already has six points and has secured its place in the next round.
The situation is even more damaging regarding the battle for third place. Australia and Paraguay, both currently on three points, face each other in the final round. As a result, at least one of those teams is guaranteed to finish above Türkiye in the standings.
Furthermore, even in a scenario where Türkiye were to finish level on points with either Australia or Paraguay, the direct head-to-head results favour the latter two teams. That advantage effectively ensures that the Turkish side cannot climb out of last place in Group D.
Because of these circumstances, Türkiye has also lost any realistic opportunity to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Haiti Also Exits the Tournament
Türkiye is not the only nation whose World Cup campaign has ended before the final round of group matches.
Haiti has also been officially eliminated after suffering defeats in its first two games. The Caribbean side lost 1-0 to Scotland before being beaten 3-0 by Brazil.
The team remains bottom of Group C with zero points. Brazil and Morocco both have four points, while Scotland has collected three.
With only one match left to play, Haiti cannot close the gap to the leading teams. The side also lost its direct encounter with Scotland, removing any remaining chance of advancing.
As a result, Haiti’s final group-stage match against Morocco on Thursday, 25 June, will have no impact on qualification.
Tournament Ends in Disappointment
For Türkiye, the 2026 World Cup has ended much earlier than anticipated. Despite the expanded format creating additional opportunities for teams to progress beyond the group stage, consecutive defeats against Australia and Paraguay proved decisive.
With one match still left to play, Türkiye’s elimination has already been confirmed, bringing an abrupt end to its campaign and leaving supporters reflecting on what might have been in Group D.
