2026 World Cup: Algeria bow out as Switzerland march into Round of 16

Switzerland ended Algeria’s impressive FIFA World Cup campaign with a clinical 2-0 victory to secure a place in the Round of 16, producing a disciplined display that punished the North Africans’ missed opportunities.

Algeria entered the knockout clash full of confidence after an outstanding group-stage campaign that saw them finish runners-up behind Argentina and ahead of Austria and Jordan.

Vladimir Petkovic’s side had earned widespread praise for their resilience and attacking intent, but they found Switzerland’s organisation and efficiency difficult to break down.

The opening stages were evenly contested, with Algeria enjoying spells of possession and looking to threaten through quick transitions. Switzerland, however, remained patient and compact, limiting clear-cut chances while waiting for openings of their own.

The breakthrough eventually arrived as the Swiss made their pressure count, taking the lead through a well-worked move that silenced the Algerian supporters. The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Switzerland’s favour, forcing Algeria to push higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser.

Algeria responded with greater urgency after the interval and created several promising moments, but a combination of determined defending and wasteful finishing prevented them from drawing level. Switzerland continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack, exploiting the spaces left behind by their increasingly adventurous opponents.

Their place in the next round was effectively secured when they doubled their advantage in the second half. The second goal rewarded another composed attacking move and left Algeria needing an unlikely comeback in the closing stages.

Despite continuing to battle until the final whistle, Algeria were unable to find a way through as Switzerland comfortably saw out the contest to seal a deserved victory and book their place in the last 16.

Although the defeat ended Algeria’s World Cup journey, the Desert Foxes leave the tournament with plenty to be proud of. Returning to the global stage with renewed belief, they progressed from one of the competition’s toughest groups and produced several memorable performances, including earning qualification ahead of Austria.

For Switzerland, the victory highlighted their experience and tactical discipline. Having successfully navigated the group stage, they once again demonstrated their ability to rise to the occasion in knockout football and will now look to build on their momentum in the Round of 16.

Algeria’s players received warm applause from their traveling supporters at the final whistle, recognizing a campaign that restored optimism around the national team despite the disappointment of falling at the first knockout hurdle.
