Wydad sack Patrice Carteron after poor run

Wydad Athletic Club have dismissed head coach Patrice Carteron following a series of disappointing results.

The decision was taken after the team’s defeat to Ittihad Yaacoub El Mansour on Wednesday, a result that extended their poor run of form and prompted action from the club’s leadership.

Wydad have gone five matches without a win, a sequence that ultimately led to Carteron’s departure despite his appointment being intended to stabilise the team’s performances.

Club president Hicham Ait Mana has acted swiftly to name a successor, appointing Mohamed Benchrifa as the new head coach.

Benchrifa takes over with immediate effect and has been tasked with improving results and guiding the team back into contention in the domestic league.

He will be supported by a technical staff that includes Tariq Al-Jarmouni as goalkeeping coach, Youssef Ashami as assistant coach, and Idris Wajo as physical trainer.

The new coaching team inherits a squad featuring high-profile players such as Hakim Ziyech, with expectations that the group has the quality to recover from the recent downturn.

Wydad are among Morocco’s most successful clubs and are traditionally strong contenders in the Botola Pro.

However, their recent form has raised concerns about their ability to compete at the highest level this season, prompting the club to make a managerial change.

Benchrifa’s immediate challenge will be to restore confidence within the squad and halt the winless streak, while also maintaining the club’s ambitions in the league.

With the season still ongoing, Wydad’s leadership will be hoping the change in management provides a fresh impetus as they seek to regain momentum and reassert themselves in the title race.
