Omar Marmoush will look to end his prolonged goal drought when Egypt begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Angola at Cairo International Stadium on Friday.
The Tottenham forward enters the Egypt camp seeking to rediscover his scoring form after struggling to find the net for both club and country.
The match against Angola is the first of three opportunities for Marmoush to regain his confidence during the current international break. Egypt will also face South Sudan on 29 September before meeting South Africa in a friendly on 4 October.
Marmoush has yet to score in six appearances since the start of the season. He has featured five times for Tottenham, including four Premier League matches and a League Cup meeting with Liverpool, while also playing for Manchester City in the Community Shield.
Despite those appearances, the Egypt international has not celebrated a goal this season.
His last club goal came on 13 May last year, when he scored for Manchester City in a 3-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace during the 2025-26 campaign.
He has since gone eight matches without finding the net at club level.
Marmoush searching for Egypt goal
The forward’s difficulties have also continued with the national team.
Marmoush’s most recent goal for Egypt came against Saudi Arabia in a friendly on 27 March, when the Pharaohs recorded a 4-0 victory.
He has subsequently played eight matches for his country without scoring.
His recent World Cup campaign also ended without a goal or assist. Marmoush featured in five matches, accumulating 326 minutes, as Egypt were eliminated by Argentina in the last 16.
His performances during the tournament attracted considerable criticism from Egyptian supporters after he missed several opportunities to score.
The Angola match therefore comes at a significant point in Marmoush’s international career, with Egypt’s coaching staff, led by Hossam Hassan, continuing to regard him as an important attacking option.
However, the striker’s position in the starting XI is not guaranteed after his difficult spell with both Tottenham and the national team.
Three matches to rediscover his scoring touch
Marmoush will have three matches during the current camp to try to bring an end to his scoring problems.
Egypt’s opening AFCON 2027 qualifier against Angola will be followed by the meeting with South Sudan on 29 September and then the friendly against South Africa on 4 October.
A goal for the Pharaohs could provide Marmoush with a boost after his slow start at Tottenham and give him an opportunity to rebuild confidence with the national team.
The forward will therefore hope the international break can provide a change in fortunes after a difficult period in front of goal.
Marmoush is seeking to end a run of 14 matches without scoring for club and country, with Friday’s meeting against Angola providing his first opportunity to do so.
For Egypt, the priority is to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign positively. For Marmoush, the fixture also represents an opportunity to rediscover the scoring form that has been missing for much of the recent period.
