Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed a deal to sign former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele on a free transfer, with the move expected to be completed shortly.
The 29-year-old is set to join the South African champions on a two-year contract with an option to extend as Sundowns look to add depth to their midfield ahead of the new season.
Cele’s departure from Kaizer Chiefs was confirmed on Monday after the midfielder and the club mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
That decision has allowed Sundowns to move quickly for the former Bafana Bafana international, who is expected to be formally unveiled by Masandawana once the final details are completed.
Cele joined Chiefs in January 2025 after spending almost a decade playing in Europe.
His European career included spells with Real SC, Benfica B and Cova da Piedade in Portugal before he continued his career in Poland and Russia.
He became a popular figure among Chiefs supporters during his time at the club but fell out of favour towards the end of his spell.
Cele was left out of Chiefs’ pre-season tour of Spain and was subsequently deemed surplus to requirements as the club reshaped its midfield.
The arrival of Tanzania international Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from AZAM FC further reduced Cele’s prospects, with the midfielder failing to make an appearance after the new signing joined.
Sundowns have also been active in the transfer market, completing the signing of Deano van Rooyen on a free transfer following his departure from Orlando Pirates.
Cele’s arrival is expected to provide further depth in midfield, particularly following the tragic passing of Jayden Adams after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso already has several options in the position, including Teboho Mokoena, Marcelo Allende, Bathusi Aubaas, Sphelele Mkhulise, Gomolemo Kekana and Tsiki Ntsabeleng.
However, the addition of Cele gives Sundowns another experienced option as they prepare for a demanding season across domestic and continental competitions.
The move will represent Cele’s return to domestic football after his lengthy spell abroad and his time at Kaizer Chiefs.
Sundowns now only need to complete the remaining formalities before confirming the midfielder as their latest signing.
