Egypt international Mahmoud Trezeguet will miss around four weeks after Al-Riyadh confirmed that the winger has suffered a second-degree hamstring tear.
The Saudi club announced the diagnosis on Wednesday after Trezeguet was forced off early in Al-Riyadh’s Saudi Professional League match against Al-Khaleej.
Trezeguet suffered the injury during the sixth round fixture and was substituted in the 14th minute. The Egyptian was visibly distressed as he left the field in tears, raising concerns about the seriousness of the problem.
Those concerns have now been confirmed following medical examinations.
Al-Riyadh said the player will undergo a four-week recovery programme, with part of his treatment to be conducted alongside the Egyptian national team medical staff.
The club published a statement through its official social media accounts which said: “Medical examinations revealed that Mahmoud Trezeguet, a player on the team, suffered a second-degree hamstring tear. The player will be out of action for 4 weeks and will complete his treatment program with the medical staff of the Egyptian national team, in coordination with the club’s first team doctor.”
The injury is a significant setback for Trezeguet, who had been involved regularly for his new club since arriving in Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window.
Egypt matches ruled out
Trezeguet’s expected four-week absence means he will not be available for Egypt’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Angola and South Sudan.
He will also miss the friendly against South Africa, according to the information surrounding his injury.
The winger’s absence will therefore deprive the Egypt national team of one of its international options during a period that includes both competitive qualifying fixtures and a friendly.
Trezeguet’s treatment will involve coordination between the medical staff of his club and the Egyptian national team, as he begins the process of recovering from the hamstring tear.
The injury is not the first muscle problem he has experienced since joining Al-Riyadh.
Before the latest setback, Trezeguet had already missed the Saudi Professional League’s fifth-round match against Al-Ahli after suffering a minor muscle strain.
His latest injury, however, is more serious and is expected to keep him out for approximately one month.
Trezeguet’s start at Al-Riyadh
The Egyptian winger joined Al-Riyadh during the summer after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Egyptian club Al-Ahly.
Since making the move, Trezeguet has featured in six matches for Al-Riyadh across various competitions.
He has scored once in the Saudi Professional League and has also provided an assist in the competition. In addition, he has created another goal in the King’s Cup.
His contribution in front of goal had given him a productive start to his time with the Saudi club, but the latest injury means his progress will now be interrupted.
The timing of the setback also leaves Trezeguet facing a period of rehabilitation rather than further appearances for either Al-Riyadh or Egypt.
His immediate priority will be completing the treatment programme and returning to fitness.
Al-Riyadh’s confirmation provides clarity after the winger’s emotional departure from the match against Al-Khaleej. The diagnosis of a second-degree hamstring tear means the Egyptian will now spend the coming weeks recovering under medical supervision.
For Egypt, the absence of Trezeguet removes an attacking option from the squad for the matches against Angola and South Sudan, as well as the meeting with South Africa.
For Al-Riyadh, meanwhile, the club will have to manage without a player who had already contributed goals and assists during his opening six appearances.
Trezeguet is expected to be sidelined for four weeks, with his recovery being coordinated by Al-Riyadh’s medical team and the Egyptian national team medical staff.
