Stuttgart striker Tiago Tomas is expected to miss several weeks after suffering a “slight muscle injury” in training, head coach Sebastian Hoeness confirmed on Thursday.
The Portuguese forward will not be available again “until after the international break”, according to Sport1 in Germany. His absence is a setback for Stuttgart as they prepare for a busy run of domestic and European fixtures.
Tiago Tomas started Stuttgart’s first two official German Cup matches this season. He was involved in the side’s 4-0 away win against Rostock before also starting the second-round tie that ended in a 5-1 defeat away to Bayern Munich.
Stuttgart’s first home league match of the campaign comes this weekend, when they host Cologne. Hoeness will have to plan without Tiago Tomas as the club begin a demanding period of the season.
Before the international break at the end of September, Stuttgart are scheduled to meet Norwegian club Viking in the Champions League. They will also travel to face Hoffenheim in the league before hosting Dortmund.
The club’s injury list remains extensive. Hoeness is still without defenders Dennis Seimen, Jaquez, Zagadou and Nartey, while forwards Jeremy Arevalo and Dier are also unavailable.
There was some more positive news regarding the squad’s fitness. Assignon has returned to full training, while Fuhrich has “participated in most of this week’s training.”
New signing Leo Sauer is set to be included in the matchday squad for the first time when Stuttgart play Cologne.
The timing of Tiago Tomas’ injury means he is expected to miss the club’s upcoming fixtures before the international break, with Stuttgart facing a combination of league and Champions League commitments.
