Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as head coach of Ghana, with the Portuguese manager set to begin a new spell in charge during the next international window.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, that it had reached an agreement with Queiroz to lead the Black Stars into the next phase of the national team’s programme.
Queiroz’s first spell as Ghana manager ended a few weeks after the 2026 World Cup, where he oversaw all three of the team’s matches. His return comes with Ghana preparing for the next stage of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars will face Cote d’Ivoire on 24 September before playing Gambia in Group C. Those matches will mark the beginning of Queiroz’s new mandate and provide the first test of Ghana’s plans under the experienced Portuguese coach.
In a statement, the GFA said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as head coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme. Following discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would begin a new tenure as head coach, starting from the next international window.”
The Ghanaian federation said it had been persuaded by Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and familiarity with the Black Stars. Those qualities are expected to help him oversee a new phase for the national side after his previous period in charge concluded shortly after the World Cup.
His immediate priority will be to guide Ghana through the opening fixtures of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The federation’s stated target is to secure qualification for the tournament, with the opening Group C matches against Cote d’Ivoire and Gambia now forming the first part of that challenge.
Queiroz is therefore returning to a team he already knows, while Ghana begin another cycle under his leadership. The next international window will provide the first opportunity for the Black Stars to work with him again and for the coach to start implementing the plans associated with his renewed appointment.
The agreement was reached after discussions involving Queiroz, the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. The announcement confirms that the Portuguese will take charge for the forthcoming phase rather than remain in a temporary or short-term role.
