St Mirren left Rugby Park with a 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock, Fraser Taylor’s first goal for the club securing their first league win at the venue in more than 13 years and leaving Neil McCann’s side without a point from their opening three Premiership matches.
The visitors missed several opportunities to establish a comfortable lead in the first half, but had to withstand sustained pressure after the break as Kilmarnock searched for an equaliser.
McCann responded to last weekend’s 4-0 home defeat by Dundee United with three changes to his defence and a switch in formation. Having conceded 13 goals across their first three league games, Kilmarnock moved from a back four to a 3-5-2 system in an effort to improve their defensive organisation.
Erik Ring, George Stanger and Johnly Yfeko were brought into the starting line-up. Robbie Deas was unavailable through injury, Nicky Clescenco dropped out and Jonathan Meier was named among the substitutes.
St Mirren made one alteration, with Taylor making his first league start of the new campaign in place of Samuel Ramos.
Kilmarnock had an early opportunity when Max Stryjek’s long pass exposed the visiting defence in the third minute. Joe Hugill broke forward, but the striker could not bring the ball under control.
St Mirren took the lead moments later after profiting from an error in midfield. The Buddies moved quickly on the counter-attack and Taylor finished by sweeping Nikolas Agrafiotis’ pass into the bottom corner.
The goal appeared to increase the anxiety among the home support whenever St Mirren advanced into the final third.
The visitors almost doubled their lead in the 13th minute after a flowing passing move opened up the Kilmarnock defence. Calvin Ramsay’s effort took a deflection from Yfeko before striking the right-hand post.
A further opening arrived shortly after the half-hour mark, but Yfeko produced an important block to deny Chris Mochrie. The resulting corner created more uncertainty in the Kilmarnock penalty area, although Declan John could not capitalise and sliced his effort well wide.
Paul Nsio then sent an angled strike high and wide in the final minute of the opening period as St Mirren continued to threaten.
McCann made a triple change at half-time after another disappointing performance from his team. Jamie Brandon, Aaron Tshibola and Djenairo Daniels replaced Tyreece John-Jules, Yfeko and Ring.
Kilmarnock showed greater urgency after the interval and St Mirren goalkeeper Jacob Chapman was forced into his first save in the 47th minute, pushing away Tom Lowery’s free-kick.
The home side continued to press as heavy rain fell at Rugby Park. On the hour, Chapman comfortably collected Michael Schjonning-Larsen’s low effort.
However, Kilmarnock’s attempts to commit players forward also left space for St Mirren to attack. Jake Young combined effectively with Nsio on one counter, but the forward was unable to adjust his feet quickly enough to get a shot away.
Kilmarnock created a promising opening at the other end soon afterwards. Chapman rushed from his goal to confront Daniels, who failed to take advantage and instead put the ball into the side netting.
With 17 minutes remaining, Alex Gogic made a determined block to prevent Rory McKenzie’s volley from finding the target.
Kilmarnock’s final significant chance came in the last minute, when Cathal McCarthy found space inside the area from a corner but headed into the side-netting.
Despite a more positive second-half display, Kilmarnock created too few clear chances to avoid a third successive defeat. St Mirren held on for a valuable victory in Ayrshire and a rare league win at Rugby Park.
