Arsenal winger Ethan Nwaneri has joined Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the 2026-27 season, moving to the German club from the reigning Premier League champions.
The 19-year-old becomes the latest English youngster to continue his development at Dortmund, following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and Jamie Gittens.
Unlike those players, however, Nwaneri’s switch is not a permanent move. He will spend the rest of the campaign at Borussia Dortmund before returning to Arsenal, where he remains contracted as part of the Premier League champions’ squad.
Dortmund completed the deal after fellow new signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered an ACL injury that is expected to keep him out for most of the season. Nwaneri’s arrival gives the German club another option in the wide areas during a campaign affected by that absence.
The move represents another temporary spell away from Arsenal for Nwaneri, whose opportunities with the first team have been limited since he made history with the club.
Nwaneri remains the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League. He made his Arsenal debut against Brentford in 2022 at the age of 15 years and 181 days.
That appearance marked the beginning of a record-breaking senior career, but regular first-team football has not yet followed. Arsenal subsequently allowed the winger to leave on loan for the second half of last season, when he joined Marseille.
During that spell, Nwaneri made 11 appearances in all competitions and scored twice. His move to Borussia Dortmund now provides another opportunity to gain experience at senior level, this time in Germany.
The teenager joins a club with a recent history of working with promising English players. Sancho, Bellingham and Gittens all made the move to Dortmund as young players, putting their development in the spotlight during their time in the Bundesliga.
Nwaneri’s agreement differs from those transfers because it is limited to the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign. His immediate objective will be to establish himself in Dortmund’s side while filling a need created by Konstantelias’ long-term injury.
For Arsenal, the loan gives Nwaneri the chance to continue his progress away from north London after a restricted number of senior appearances and his previous experience with Marseille.
The winger’s two goals in 11 appearances last season form the most recent record of his first-team involvement. His next chapter will now take place at Borussia Dortmund, where he will spend the rest of the season on loan.
