Hee Chan Hwang has joined Bundesliga side Schalke 04 on loan for the season, with the German club holding an option to make the move permanent next summer.
The South Korea international has not featured for Wolverhampton Wanderers under head coach Cesar Peixoto this season and will now return to Germany in search of regular first-team football and a route back to his best form.
Hwang first moved to Wolverhampton in 2021 and made 119 appearances for the club over the following five years, scoring 22 goals. He is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ third-highest scorer in the Premier League but has found the net less regularly in recent seasons.
His last appearance for the club came on the final day of last season at Burnley. Since the arrival of Peixoto, he has not been included in a matchday squad.
The 2023/24 campaign was Hwang’s most productive period in a Wolverhampton Wanderers shirt. He scored 13 goals under Gary O’Neil, including a memorable winner against Manchester City and two goals in a major victory away to Brentford.
Hwang is now heading back to a country he knows well, having previously played for RB Leipzig. The loan provides him with the opportunity to regain his rhythm and secure the playing time that was unavailable to him at Molineux.
Wolverhampton Wanderers technical director Matt Jackson said the move had been completed late in the German transfer window but believes Schalke 04 offers Hwang a familiar setting in which to rebuild his form.
“It was a really late shout for Hee Chan before the German transfer window closed, but he’s going back to an environment that he’s very comfortable in and he’s just got to play games. He has real professionalism, conducting himself perfectly, and now deserves this opportunity.
“He’s expressed his frustrations, rightly, because the best players want to play all of the time. Hee Chan’s always been open with his dialogue and has been excellent in training this pre-season, knowing that he wasn’t going to be involved here, which is difficult for a player, but he accepted it with good grace.
“He’s had a major impact at our club in previous years and has certainly had some memorable times here, and hopefully he can go and recreate them at a really good football club in Schalke.”
Hwang’s departure comes after a period in which he remained professional despite being unable to force his way into Peixoto’s plans. Jackson said the forward had been clear about his disappointment at not playing, but praised his conduct during pre-season.
The loan deal gives Hwang the chance to play for Schalke 04 throughout the season, while also leaving open the possibility of a permanent transfer next summer.
