Ethan Nwaneri: Dortmund secure Arsenal attacking midfielder on loan

England and Nigeria midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has joined Dortmund from Arsenal on loan, bringing the 19-year-old attacking midfielder to the Bundesliga club until 30 June 2027.

Nwaneri, who was born in London, switches clubs after returning to Arsenal at the end of last season following a loan spell with Marseille. He joined the French club in January 2026 and spent the second half of the campaign there before moving back to Arsenal in June.

The move to Dortmund represents the latest step in a career that began in Arsenal’s youth system. Nwaneri progressed from Arsenal Youth to Arsenal Under-18s and then Arsenal Under-21s before becoming part of the senior set-up.

He arrives in Germany as a left-footed attacking midfielder and has been given the number 18 shirt at Dortmund. His recorded market value is €35m, while his highest valuation has been €55m.

Nwaneri was part of Arsenal’s English championship-winning squad in the 2025-26 season. He also helped England Under-21s win the European Under-21 Championship in 2025 and finished as the FA Youth Cup’s leading scorer in the 2023-24 campaign, scoring six goals for Arsenal.

His international background gives him eligibility for both England and Nigeria. He has represented England at Under-21 level, including during the side’s European title-winning campaign.

The move follows a season in which Nwaneri divided his club commitments between Arsenal and Marseille. Marseille paid a €1.5m loan fee for his January switch, before his temporary spell ended on 30 June and he returned to the north London club.

Dortmund’s agreement with Arsenal runs until the end of June 2027, when the transfer record lists Nwaneri as returning to Arsenal. The completed loan move was registered on 1 September 2026.
