Stefan Bajcetic is due to undergo a medical at Celta de Vigo on Monday before completing a return to the club where he began his football education, according to Spanish outlet Metropolitano.
The midfielder is expected to sign a three-year contract with Celta after a five-year absence. He left the club’s academy at the age of 16 to join Liverpool, where he progressed through the Reds’ system and made his senior breakthrough.
Bajcetic’s return will initially focus on rebuilding his fitness rather than an immediate push for first-team football. After being out with a muscle injury for more than 15 months, he is set to train and play with Celta Fortuna, the club’s reserve side, before trying to establish himself in the senior team.
The 21-year-old has not played since May 2025. His most recent loan spell, at Las Palmas, failed to provide the desired platform for regular football, and he will now look to revive his career at a club he knows well.
The move has been negotiated within Celta’s financial limits. Bajcetic has agreed to take a significant reduction in wages, giving up a substantial salary from the final year of his Liverpool contract to accept terms based on Celta’s pay structure for young players.
Reports say his agreement will follow the same general salary model as those of Xavi Rodriguez, Rueda, Hugo Alvarez and Joel Lago. While he is with Celta Fortuna, Bajcetic will receive a fixed wage. That figure will rise if he earns promotion to the first team, while additional bonuses will be available depending on his number of senior appearances.
The contract is therefore heavily linked to performance. Bajcetic, who can operate both in midfield and at centre-back, is understood to have been keen to return to Celta and made considerable financial concessions to ensure the transfer could be completed.
Celta will not pay Liverpool a fixed transfer fee for the player. However, the agreement includes performance-related add-ons, and Liverpool will retain a percentage of any future transfer fee if Bajcetic is sold. There is no buy-back clause in the deal.
Bajcetic came through Celta’s youth academy before moving to Liverpool, and also spent time on loan at RB Salzburg and Las Palmas. His next challenge will be to regain match fitness with Celta Fortuna and work towards returning to the first-team picture.
