Atletico Madrid will have the option to sign Juventus striker Jonathan David permanently for €25m after his proposed loan move, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The clause will not be mandatory, meaning Atletico Madrid will decide in summer 2027 whether to make the Canadian forward’s transfer permanent. The Spanish club will therefore have the opportunity to assess David during his loan spell before committing to a permanent deal.
Romano has provided further details of the agreement between the two clubs, having previously reported that Atletico Madrid and Juventus had reached an understanding over the player’s temporary move.
Under the terms of the proposed arrangement, Atletico Madrid will pay more than half of David’s salary during the loan. The agreement will also include the €25m purchase option, but the Madrid club will not be obliged to exercise it.
The structure gives Atletico Madrid control over the next stage of the striker’s career without requiring an immediate permanent transfer. A final decision on whether David remains in Spain would be made in two years’ time, when the option becomes relevant in summer 2027.
David joined Juventus as a free agent in summer 2025 and has been with the Turin club since then. His potential move to Atletico Madrid would therefore come after only two years at Juventus, with the Italian side agreeing to send him out on loan while retaining a route to a permanent outcome through the purchase clause.
The latest information comes from Romano, who first revealed that the two clubs had agreed the basic terms of the loan. His update now outlines the financial mechanism attached to the deal, including the value of the option and the division of the player’s wages.
Although the transfer is not yet a permanent switch, Atletico Madrid would have the chance to secure David’s rights for €25m if the club chooses to do so in 2027. The clause is optional rather than compulsory, leaving the final decision entirely with the Spanish side.
For now, the agreement concerns a loan from Juventus to Atletico Madrid, with the Canadian’s future beyond the temporary spell still undecided. David has been a Juventus player since arriving without a transfer fee in 2025, but the proposed move would see Atletico Madrid take responsibility for more than half of his salary and retain the choice of whether to continue with him permanently.
