Inter Milan maintained their perfect start to the Serie A season with a 1-0 victory at Cagliari, while Napoli were beaten 2-1 at home by Como on Sunday.
Hakan Calhanoglu scored the only goal of the match after nine minutes, sending the defending champions to the top of the table with six points from their opening two games. Cagliari remain on three points in 13th place.
Inter made the breakthrough with a swift move down the right. Nicolo Barella carried the ball inside before delivering a cross towards Calhanoglu, who struck first time with his right foot from outside the penalty area. His effort flew accurately into the bottom corner.
Lautaro Martinez went close to adding a second when he turned sharply before sending a shot just wide of the post. Manuel Akanji also threatened from a Federico Dimarco free-kick, but his header drifted beyond the far post.
Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile kept his side in contention with an excellent save from a powerful Barella effort. He was called upon again soon afterwards, tipping a fierce Dimarco shot over the crossbar.
Inter continued to create opportunities after the interval. Caprile had to react quickly to keep out a shot from Esposito on the goal line following another pass from Barella.
Cagliari began to regain control as the game approached the hour mark, but Inter held on to secure a valuable away win.
Curtis Jones made his first appearance for Inter, while John Stones was also introduced from the substitutes’ bench. Alessandro Bastoni was unable to keep his effort on target after connecting with another cross from Dimarco.
Como punish Napoli
Napoli suffered a damaging home defeat as Como came from behind to win 2-1 in front of the home supporters.
Como opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Martin Baturina, but Napoli responded 13 minutes later when Rasmus Højlund levelled the contest.
The visitors restored their advantage only four minutes after the equaliser. Anastasios Douvikas found the net to put Como back in front, and they held on for all three points.
The result moved Como up to sixth with four points. Napoli, managed by Massimiliano Allegri, remain on three points and sit 10th.
Lazio also made it two wins from two by beating Genoa 1-0 at home. Davide Frattesi scored the decisive goal in the 25th minute.
That victory leaves Lazio fourth with six points, while Genoa have yet to register a point and occupy 16th place.
