Mohammed Kudus has made his long-awaited return to competitive football for Tottenham Hotspur after spending seven months on the sidelines with injury.
The Ghana midfielder came off the bench in the 68th minute during Tottenham’s 2-0 home defeat by Newcastle United on Saturday, marking his first appearance since January.
Newcastle secured all three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa, but the match also provided a significant moment for Tottenham as Kudus returned to the squad.
The 26-year-old had been unavailable since suffering an injury during Tottenham’s match against Sunderland in January. His recovery was subsequently delayed when he suffered a relapse in April.
As a result, Kudus was forced to endure a lengthy spell away from first-team football, missing 237 days and 25 matches for Tottenham in all competitions.
His return to action represents an important stage in his recovery as he begins the process of rebuilding his fitness and regaining the sharpness required for regular competitive football.
Kudus was introduced with Tottenham already facing a difficult situation against Newcastle. The home side ultimately could not find a way back into the game, with Newcastle’s two goals securing a comfortable victory.
Despite the result, Kudus’ involvement will provide encouragement as Tottenham continue their campaign. His return gives the club another attacking option after his extended absence and allows him to begin working towards full match fitness.
The Ghana international will now be looking to build on his first appearance since January and gradually increase his involvement as he continues his comeback.
For Kudus, the priority will be to regain his physical condition and match rhythm following an absence that kept him out of action for more than seven months.
His comeback could also prove significant for Ghana, with the Black Stars preparing for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Kudus’ return gives Ghana another reason for optimism as the national team approaches its upcoming qualifiers. The midfielder will hope to establish his fitness and form in time to contribute to the Black Stars’ efforts.
Ghana are scheduled to travel to Bouake to face Ivory Coast on 24 September before returning home to host Gambia in Accra three days later.
The timing of Kudus’ return means he now has an opportunity to work towards being in the best possible condition for those fixtures.
However, after such a lengthy absence, his immediate task will be to build his fitness gradually and regain the confidence that comes with regular competitive football.
Kudus’ seven-month spell on the sidelines was extended by the setback he suffered in April, making his appearance against Newcastle an important milestone in his rehabilitation.
Although Tottenham were unable to mark his comeback with a victory, the Ghanaian’s return to the pitch ends a long period of uncertainty over when he would be able to play again.
Having missed 25 matches in all competitions, Kudus can now begin the next stage of his recovery through competitive football.
Tottenham will hope his return can strengthen their squad as the season progresses, while Ghana will be monitoring his fitness closely ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
For now, Kudus’ appearance against Newcastle is the first step towards a full return. The midfielder will be aiming to build on those 22 minutes, recover his match sharpness and establish himself once again as an important player for both club and country.
