Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued as Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory in north London, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a point or a goal after their opening two matches.
Anthony Elanga put Newcastle ahead in the 62nd minute before Yoane Wissa doubled the visitors’ advantage 10 minutes later. The result lifted Newcastle to third in the early-season table and gave Matthias Jaissle his first competitive victory as manager.
Tottenham had shown a significant improvement from last weekend’s 3-0 defeat by Brentford during the opening half, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek produced a series of important saves to keep the match goalless.
Antonin Kinsky had survived an early warning when he failed to deal convincingly with Elanga’s cross-shot. Spurs then took control for long periods, with Hornicek denying Mathys Tel and Andy Robertson before stopping Jan Paul van Hecke’s header at the second attempt.
Pedro Porro also appeared to have an opportunity to make progress down the right, only for Lewis Hall to make an excellent recovery challenge. Newcastle went into half-time having been second best for much of the opening 45 minutes, but their performance changed sharply after the interval.
Hall sent a 20-yard curling effort just over the top-right corner before Newcastle finally made their pressure count.
Amar Dedic headed Nico Gonzalez’s long, searching pass into the path of Elanga, who turned on the right side of the penalty area. The forward’s left-footed shot struck the inside of the far post and slowly crossed the line to give Newcastle the lead.
Spurs were unable to respond and fell further behind in the 72nd minute. Substitute Nick Woltemade won the ball at the far post and Wissa hooked the delivery beyond Kinsky, silencing most of the crowd inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
There was little sign of a late Tottenham recovery as Newcastle protected their lead with ease.
De Zerbi had made five changes to the Tottenham starting XI after the heavy defeat at Brentford, the first time Spurs have made that many alterations between their opening two Premier League matches of a season. New signing Omar Marmoush was included from the start.
Jaissle also gave an immediate debut to Nico Gonzalez, who joined Newcastle from Manchester City this week, and his selection proved more influential as the visitors became the first side to win at Tottenham in the campaign.
Newcastle have now won four of their past five Premier League visits to Spurs. Their 14 away victories against Tottenham in the competition are more than they have recorded against any other club.
Wissa continues to be a particularly difficult opponent for Tottenham. He has scored three goals in his past four Premier League appearances against them and appears to have rediscovered his best form after a challenging 2025-26 campaign.
Woltemade, who endured an inconsistent season last term, supplied the assist with his first touch after coming off the bench.
Elanga has also made a strong start after a quiet debut campaign following his big-money move to Newcastle last year. He is the first player to score in each of the Magpies’ opening two Premier League matches of a season since Alan Shearer in 2003-04.
Newcastle will try to extend that momentum when they host Bournemouth next week. Tottenham travel to Nottingham Forest with pressure already mounting on De Zerbi.
