John Terry believes Chelsea have completed their strongest transfer window in a decade, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez standing out as the club’s most important addition.
Speaking on his personal podcast, Terry said Chelsea’s decision to sign Martinez from Aston Villa had significantly strengthened the squad and identified the Argentina international as the player who could make the biggest difference.
“I think E. Martinez coming in is the biggest signing of the summer,” Terry said on his personal podcast. “He is truly a world-class goalkeeper. If I could choose any player in the world to sign, he would absolutely be my top choice.”
Martinez established himself as a key figure during his time at Aston Villa, and Terry highlighted both his performances and his character as important reasons why the move represented such a major coup for Chelsea.
“We signed him from Aston Villa, and his performances there were incredible. The confidence he displayed, his work ethic, his impact on the team, and his mentality were all outstanding.”
Terry also praised the goalkeeper’s competitive attitude, distribution and ability to control his penalty area. He believes those qualities will provide greater security to a Chelsea defence that can now rely on an experienced presence behind it.
“He’s someone who wants to win every day, absolutely hates conceding goals in training, and takes pride in keeping clean sheets. Everything about this guy is world-class. I’m very pleased he’s joined us. His distribution is excellent, his shot-stopping is strong, but what I appreciate most about himbesides his penalty-saving abilityis his command of the box. He always catches the ball at the highest point, taking pressure off the defenders.”
The former Chelsea captain said the club’s owners and sporting directors had adopted a clearer and more effective approach to recruitment during the summer. In his view, the changes have addressed a previous imbalance in the squad, where youth had not always been supported by enough experience.
Terry emphasized that the board’s clear shift in transfer strategy has significantly strengthened Chelsea’s position to compete for major honours.
“In recent years, many of us were concerned about having too many young players and too few experienced heads in the squad.”
He also credited the club’s transfer business in the opposite direction, arguing that Chelsea had managed to move on players who had failed to meet expectations while still generating a profit.
“I think what the club owners and sporting directors have accomplished this summer represents one of the most successful transfer windows for any football club in the last decade.They sold some underperforming players we thought were overpaid signings but still made a profit, which was shrewd business.”
Alongside Martinez, Terry pointed to the arrivals of Estevao and Palmer as evidence of Chelsea’s ambition. He said the club’s younger players could benefit from having more experienced teammates available to guide them through difficult periods.
“We’ve brought in impactful players like Estevao and Palmer. These young talents sometimes need experienced players around them to help them through difficult moments. Having these seasoned veterans in the squad will greatly benefit the entire team.”
Terry’s comments underline his belief that Chelsea’s summer activity has not only improved the squad technically but also created a better balance between emerging talent and established experience.
