Speaking on Canal+ Sport’s “Talents d’Afrique” programme on Monday, the vice-captain outlined the team’s ambitions ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

“Before the start of the AFCON, we told ourselves that the most important thing was to qualify for the World Cup. It’s true, we couldn’t neglect the AFCON, and we showed a good face until our elimination in the last minute against Algeria.
“We are the only team to have held the African Champion to a draw,” he said.
The Leopards secured their place at the 2026 tournament after defeating Jamaica 1-0 in an intercontinental play-off final in Mexico, sealing a return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when the country competed as Zaire.
Bakambu, who plays for Real Betis, believes the focus now is on making a meaningful impact at the tournament rather than simply participating.
“For this World Cup, the Leopards’ ambition is first and foremost to get out of this group, and we’ll see. We’re going to work to achieve that,” he added.
DR Congo have been drawn in a challenging group alongside Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan, presenting a significant test as they aim to progress to the knockout stages.
The team heads into the tournament with growing confidence following a steady rise in international rankings.
According to FIFA’s latest standings released on April 1, DR Congo moved up to 46th place in the world, climbing two positions after their play-off victory.
Bakambu’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in guiding the team through the competition.
The experienced forward began his professional career with Sochaux in 2010, making over 100 appearances and scoring 21 goals during his time at the French club.
He also represented France at youth level, featuring in the under-18 and under-19 teams and playing a part in their UEFA European Under-19 Championship triumph in 2010. He later participated in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup before committing his senior international future to DR Congo.
