There is renewed optimism among Al-Merrikh supporters after the club made a series of administrative and technical changes aimed at reversing a significant decline in performances and results over the past three years.
The club’s management is now looking to captain Ramadan Agab and his team-mates to lead a strong return to continental competition, beginning with the African Champions League.
Avoiding an early exit will be a major priority, with Al-Merrikh hoping to reach the group stage and build momentum ahead of an important milestone in the club’s history.
The Sudanese side’s preparations come as the club approaches what is expected to be a major anniversary in 2027 – the centenary of the founding of Al-Merrikh under its current name.
There have been competing accounts over the club’s origins. While the club’s current and previous administrations have referred to 1908 on the team’s shirts, sports historian Abu Bakr Abdeen Sayed Ahmed has provided a different account of the club’s development.
Speaking exclusively to the winwin website, Sayed Ahmed said the club was established in 1908 under the name “Al-Musallama”, before adopting the name “Al-Merrikh” in November 1927.
That history means 2027 could become a particularly significant year for the club, with supporters potentially able to celebrate the centenary of the adoption of its current identity while also witnessing a revival on the football pitch.
Hopes of a new era
Al-Merrikh’s supporters have already seen encouraging signs of improvement since last season.
The upward trajectory has strengthened belief that the club can once again compete with some of Africa’s leading sides after several difficult years.
The potential celebrations in 2027 could extend beyond football. The club is expected to mark the occasion at its headquarters in Omdurman, while efforts are also being made to rehabilitate its stadium and other facilities after they were damaged during the war that began in April 2023.
The improving situation in the country following the cessation of the conflict has provided greater hope that those reconstruction efforts can continue.
For Al-Merrikh supporters, the prospect of celebrating the milestone at a restored club headquarters and stadium would carry particular significance.
The club missed the opportunity to mark what supporters considered its centenary in 2008. At that time, Al-Merrikh were enjoying one of the strongest periods in their history.
They reached the Confederation Cup final in 2007 before advancing to the semi-finals the following year, when the squad included players of the calibre of Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary.
The possibility of celebrating in 2027 therefore offers supporters an opportunity to look back on the club’s history while also hoping for a successful new chapter.
Champions League provides immediate test
Before any celebrations can take place, Al-Merrikh must concentrate on their immediate continental ambitions.
The club will begin its African Champions League campaign against Zambia’s Power Dynamos in the first preliminary round.
The first leg is scheduled for one of 4, 5 or 6 September, giving the Sudanese side an important early test of whether its recent improvements can translate into success against continental opposition.
There are several reasons for optimism.
The club has benefited from greater technical and administrative stability, while its foreign players have reportedly shown encouraging performances.
Al-Merrikh are also expecting the return of several established stars, led by captain Ramadan Agab.
Those factors have increased hopes that the team can progress beyond the preliminary rounds and reach the group stage.
Doing so would not only strengthen the club’s immediate continental ambitions but also provide additional time to develop the squad and build towards the potentially historic events of 2027.
