Algeria have qualified for the Women’s World Cup for the first time after coming from behind to beat 10-player Ivory Coast 2-1 in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final in Casablanca.
The Fennecs overturned an early deficit with second-half goals from Ines Khiri and Amira Ould Braham to reach the WAFCON semi-finals for the first time.
Their victory also secured Algeria one of Africa’s four automatic places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, which will be staged from 24 June to 25 July.
Ivory Coast took the lead through Ines Konan, but their hopes suffered a major blow before half-time when Nsira Ouedraogo was sent off in the 41st minute for a boot to the face of Algerian goalkeeper Chloe N’Gazi.
Algeria took advantage of their numerical advantage after the break, with Khiri equalising before Ould Braham completed the turnaround.
The Ivorians were presented with an opportunity to level when they were awarded a second-half penalty, but Rebecca Elloh struck the post with her effort.
Despite playing with 10 players, Ivory Coast continued to push for an equaliser and attempted to force the match into extra time.
Algeria, however, held firm and protected their advantage to secure a landmark victory.
The result marks a major breakthrough for Farid Benstiti’s side, who had been eliminated by Ghana on penalties in the quarter-finals of the previous WAFCON after a goalless draw.
This time, Algeria found the response required to go beyond the last eight and have now secured a place among the continent’s leading women’s teams.
Their achievement also carries wider significance for African women’s football.
The four nations reaching the WAFCON semi-finals automatically qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Algeria are therefore guaranteed a place at the global tournament alongside the other three semi-finalists.
The expanded qualification system also gives the losing quarter-finalists another route to the World Cup.
Ivory Coast will have one more opportunity to keep their campaign alive. They will face the loser of Sunday’s quarter-final between Ghana and Malawi in an African play-off on Thursday.
The winner of that match will advance to the FIFA inter-confederation play-offs, where three additional World Cup places will be available.
For Ivory Coast, defeat ends their immediate hopes of reaching the semi-finals but does not completely eliminate their chances of appearing at the World Cup.
The Lady Elephants had returned to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a lengthy absence and had impressed during their campaign before running into Algeria.
For Algeria, the quarter-final victory represents two historic achievements in one evening.
The Fennecs have reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time and, more importantly, have secured their country’s maiden appearance at the Women’s World Cup.
The result is also a significant moment for a side that entered the tournament determined to improve on last year’s quarter-final disappointment.
