Sergi Roberto has joined LA Galaxy on a free transfer after leaving Como, bringing an end to his two-season spell in Italy and beginning a new chapter in Major League Soccer.
The former Barcelona player signed his contract with LA Galaxy on Saturday. The agreement runs until the summer of 2028 and includes an option to extend it for a further season, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.
LA Galaxy’s announcement highlighted Roberto’s long and successful association with Barcelona, where he spent almost 18 years. The American club also noted that he won 25 trophies during his time with the Catalan side.
Roberto’s arrival gives LA Galaxy a player with extensive experience at the highest level of European football. The club’s general manager, Will Kuntz, said that experience was among the qualities that made the midfielder a valuable addition.
“Sergi Roberto brings a combination of leadership, technical quality, tactical intelligence and experience in competitions that only a few players possess,” Kuntz said on the club’s official website.
The move will also reunite Roberto with former Barcelona team-mate Riqui Puig. Puig is currently in the final stages of his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury to his knee.
Roberto and Puig played together at Barcelona between 2018 and 2022. During that period, they shared two trophy successes with the club.
Roberto left Barcelona after a career that had lasted close to two decades and subsequently spent two seasons with Como. He was an important member of the team coached by Cesc Fabregas as Como secured a historic qualification for European competitions.
His departure from Como follows that achievement and allows him to continue his career in the United States. At LA Galaxy, he will work alongside Puig once again, although Puig’s return remains linked to the final stages of his rehabilitation.
LA Galaxy’s decision to announce Roberto’s signing placed particular emphasis on the breadth of his career at Barcelona, as well as the leadership and tactical understanding he can now bring to the club. The contract’s possible extension means he could remain with the American side beyond the summer of 2028.
For Roberto, the transfer represents a free move after the conclusion of his time with Como. For LA Galaxy, it adds a player whose career includes 25 trophies with Barcelona, a lengthy spell at one of Europe’s leading clubs and recent experience with a Como side that reached European competition under Fabregas.
